If the Texans select a quarterback with the top overall pick in May's draft, they may opt to have him hold a clipboard for his rookie campaign.

And Teddy Bridgewater/Johnny Manziel/Blake Bortles would have David Carr to thank for that.

“I think the main thing I look back on is that we should have had a veteran quarterback in there,” Texans owner Bob McNair said, via the Houston Chronicle. “We should have let him start the season and let David learn what it takes to be an NFL quarterback.”

In 2002, the brand new Texans franchise used its first ever draft pick on Carr. But, as most know, the team mismanaged the situation, incomprehensibly allowing Carr to take a beating so severe (an NFL-record 76 sacks) that it forever stunted his development.

McNair hasn't forgotten.

“We weren’t able to give Carr the kind of protection we thought he should have,” he said. “I don’t put a lot of blame on him.”

The Texans were once considered a lock to take a signal-caller, giving new coach Bill O'Brien a toy to tinker with. That's changed in recent weeks, however, as the team is now reportedly mulling over defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, arguably the best talent in an extremely deep draft class.

With Ryan Fitzpatrick coming aboard via free agency, Houston has the flexibility to go best available player -- not draft for need. McNair could want to reinvigorate the fanbase with say, Johnny Football, but it's no lock they'd see him in action this season.
