The Bengals may have lost, 31-10, to the Texans yesterday, closing out their 2011. But it was a successful year. A team so many figured would finish 2-14 actually made the playoffs. That’s impressive. And they did it without so many big names from 2010, including WR Chad Ochocinco. He was on the Patriots this year, averaging 1 catch per game. After the game yesterday, I talked to a few Bengals about the differences this season. And all pointed to a far, far more together group. They didn’t outwardly call out Ochocinco. But it doesn’t take a genius to figure out they liked this year’s team much better. Allow tackle Andrew Whitworth to explain. “I think that we finally learned how to play as a team,” Whitworth said. “Are we there yet? No. Are we young? Yes. But we learned to play as a team, team football, and that’s playing all three areas and getting a whole lot better. That was one thing that was different this year. We played that way...

Bengals Down 17-10 at the Break

In a hard-fought first half that saw the Bengals leading 7-0 and 10-7, a disasterous interception return has the Bengals down 17-10 at the half. The Bengals opened the scoring on Cedric Benson’s 1-yard touchdown run set up by a 52-yard pass interference penalty.  The Texans came back and scored a touchdown on Arian Foster’s [...]

Bill Belichick 'Excited' to Host Broncos in Divisional Playoffs

The Patriots' prep work for the Broncos is officially under way. After spending a little time preparing for the Broncos last week, New England head coach Bill Belichick and his staff went headfirst into the Denver game plan Sunday night. The Pats host the Broncos at 8 p.m. Saturday. "On behalf of the entire organization, we're excited to be playing in the divisional...

Ocho blasts fiancee over gas on flight

Being engaged to a star athlete who is also active on social media has its upside. For Evelyn Lozada, it assures her name will never be far from the headlines. The downside, however, is that she's just a Chad Ochocinco tweet away from the Patriots wide receiver causing her a few headaches. Ochocinco used his 140-character allotment on Twitter to inform the world Friday of Lozada...

Making the Grade: How did the defense fare?

Has the man in the hoodie lost his mojo? The “Defensive Genius” has done little to earn that title the past few years, but 2011 may have been the worst yet. It’s hard to believe that a decade ago the Patriots defense was ripe with talent. Guys like Ty Law, Richard Seymour, Willie McGinest and Tedy Bruschi led some ferociously tough and productive units to three Super Bowl...

AFC Wild Card Playoffs: Cincinnati Bengals at Houston Texans Preview and Prediction

The first game of the NFL playoffs features two teams who are coming into the playoffs following losses. The Bengals are coming off of a loss to the Ravens that could have eliminated them from the playoffs, while the Texans are losers of three straight following their clinching of the AFC South. McDaniels headed back to Patriots

Bill O'Brien's hiring as Penn State's new head coach Saturday quickly had ramifications in the NFL, where he'd been offensive coordinator for the New England Patriots. A person familiar with the situation tells The Associated Press that the Patriots were going to hire Josh McDaniels as an offensive assistant for the rest of the season.

Broncos eye a rematch with the Patriots: “We cannot let them score 40 points, plain and simple.”

The last time the Patriots played the Broncos, it finished as a mess for Denver. They wouldn’t up losing an early lead and giving up 41 points. Yikes. When I was in the Broncos locker room last night, that game was sill fresh in their minds. “Honestly, we gotta score more points, and we gotta stop them,” said Broncos defensive end Robert Ayers, who had two sacks...
