The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

The Good

Watch Out! I’m Good!

Christian Ponder. Percy Harvin might have been the focal point of the offense, but Christian Ponder is quickly winning over fans and detractors alike with his solid, usually error-free quarterback play. Like a certain team in the Bay Area (no, not you Oakland), a great running game and an error-free quarterback can do a lot for a team in the NFL. I am not insinuating that Minnesota’s defense is anywhere close to San Francisco’s, but they have a good pass rusher in Jared Allen, and have room to grow. Christian Ponder was super-accurate coming out of Florida State and possessed seriously underrated athleticism, but, unfortunately, didn’t have an NFL arm. Ponder has been able to overcome this shortcoming to find success in the land of 10000 lakes. With Adrian Peterson on the mend from his serious knee injury, Christian Ponder and the Minnesota Vikings (yes, those Minnesota Vikings) might just run away with the NFC North.

The Bad

Fly! Be Free!

Chris Johnson.  Can we stop with Chris Johnson? Please?! He had one great season, and two more decent ones. That’s it. He got paid, and he lost his drive. He is done as an elite NFL running back. He’s done as a good NFL running back. He will be the biggest name in free agency this offseason, because you can bet your bottom dollar that Tennessee won’t continue to pay him unless he is able to turn this season around.  What is it with high-paid Tennessee Titans? First Albert Haynesworth and then Chris Johnson. They went from the best at their respective positions, then got paid, and quit.  But, outside of the 141-yard aberration against Houston, and their vaunted defense, Johnson is averaging a paltry 1.4 yards per carry. So, I officially petition the NFL and its fans to start calling him CJ-1.4 because the fastest man in the league is sprinting himself right out of it , so fast that Usain Bolt might actually not want to race him into mediocrity.

The Ugly

Mr. Soprano would like to speak with you.

Harrison Smith. This was too easy. Hey! Rookie! Don’t push a referee. You aren’t Jay-Z. This isn’t Brooklyn. It’s Minnesota. And you don’t have enough clout to be causing trouble for your team. Why don’t you go buy a boat or something? Creating enemies in zebra stripes is always a bad idea. I don’t care if you are in the heat of the moment; this is something that won’t be forgotten. I’m not suggested that NFL referees will hold grudges, but I kinda am. Whatever happened to Orlando Brown? The Cleveland Browns player who was inadvertently hit in the eye by a penalty flag, and then shoved a ref to the ground? He died. Yeah. Dead. Push a ref. Die. I’m not saying they are connected, But have you seen Ed Houchuli’s arms? Watch out, Harrison.

You can tell Houchuli I don’t need any of his…PROTECTION!

The Sequel

Yeah, maybe you shouldn’t have thrown this my way

David Amerson CB North Carolina St.

When you play in a division with Aaron Rodgers and Calvin Johnson, you can never have enough cover corners. When you give up a 30-spot to Christian Ponder, you can never have too many cover corners. David Amerson could fall to the end of the first round he could also go top 10. So I will cover all my bases with this pick. Based on his 2011 tape, Amerson was the best CB in the country. So far, in 2012 he has been an often- abused small school corner, relying more on reputation then ability to shut down opposing receivers. Amerson has been compared favorably to Nnamdi Asomugha, using his long arms, and body control to eliminate on side of the field, he also like Asomugha, can rely on name alone to discourage pass attempts his way. Regardless of how he does it, both Minnesota and Tennessee could use someone like Amerson. Or Nnamdi.
