SI.com is reporting via the Dallas Morning News that next year’s NFL Draft may have a new format. A bigger format. A prime time format. A format that adds even more green to the money-making NFL machine.
Roger Goodell is looking to hold the first round of the 2010 draft on Thursday night. The second and third rounds would also be in prime time, on Friday evening, with the final four rounds coming on Saturday. Spreading the draft over three days and holding it during prime time will increase revenue and exposure. Good for fans of the draft, good for executives in the NFL.
Goodell said: “We think it can be very appealing from a fan’s standpoint and an audience standpoint.” And we all know how much Goodell likes widening the NFL audience. Games overseas. Thursday night games. Saturday night games. Rotating Sunday night games that feature the week’s best match-up. Now he’s even figured out a way to make more money out of the draft.
Next year’s draft party? It’s going to be quite the 3-day bender.
