It was only a few years ago when discussing the top QB’s in the NFL Phillip Rivers was almost always in the conversation. With his Chargers continuing to crumble this year in similar fashion to the previous two seasons which saw them miss the playoffs. After a promising start to his career the Chargers were often considered Super Bowl contenders due to Rivers at the QB position. You can’t blame all the poor results on him because they have lost a ton of talent and still have Norv Turner as a head coach. However, when looking at some numbers it really is scary to see a regression this big, thanks to thebiglead.com for finding these stats from profootballfocus.com which I am still in awe of:Considering the entire organization is built around him he does deserve a majority of the blame. This isn’t a small drop off this is absolutely absurd. The key being the overall amount of turnovers which his a direct affect on the win loss record. When I watch Rivers in these spots it looks like he forces a lot of balls into bad spots which is what causes these brutal turnovers. I don’t know if this is due to bad coaching or him losing some of physical ability.I know it was a conversation that seemed crazy three years ago when they were winning the AFC West every year and being perennial Super Bowl contenders to think of another QB in San Diego. But, it has to be getting to the point where management needs to consider building for the future with a new look at the most important position in the NFL. If at his best they choked in the playoffs and he’s clearly not playing at that level and at the age of 30 is unlikely to get back to that level it leaves this team with ZERO chance of being a Super Bowl contender anytime soon let alone a playoff team.
