Found September 10, 2013 on Bay Sports Report:
Oakland Raiders tight end Jeron Mastrud was an afterthought in the Raiders tight end discussion this off-season, but he wound up beating out Richard Gordon for the final spot on the team. Most members of the Raider Nation probably never heard of Mastrud until his big and painfully slow 41 yard reception against the Indianapolis Colts in the 4th quarter. While most tight ends would have taken Pryor’s throw to the house, Mastrud is known more for being a blocking tight end which explains his Grady Jackson-esque running speed. The 6’6 256 pound Mastrud went undrafted out of Kansas State during the 2010 NFL draft. His slow 40-yard dash time and lackluster athleticism was to blame for Mastrud not getting drafted. After spending his first training camp with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Mastrud was cut and ended up playing musical chairs with NFL teams as he was signed and released by the Patriots and finally signed by the Miami Dolphins a few days later. In three seasons with the Dolphins, Mastrud only had one reception as he mainly played special teams. Having a big tight end like Mastrud is of upmost importance for the Oakland Raiders because of their atrocious offensive line. I was surprised to see Mastrud get the start over Nick Kasa and Mychal Rivera but the Raiders needed a veteran presence to help protect Terrelle Pryor. It remains to be seen how long Mastrud will be on the roster because David Ausberry should return to the starting lineup when gets healthy.   You can follow Jorge on twitter @jraycontreras or add him to your network on google   Jorge is the co-founder of  Football and Futbol , Bay Sports Report , Cascadia Sports and Sports Report Arizona

The Fall Of DMC: Darren McFadden Is No Longer A Star

For the second straight season, Oakland Raiders running back Darren McFadden has gotten off to an awful start. McFadden was wholly ineffective against the Colts as he rushed for 48 yards on 17 carries. While most observers would brush off McFadden’s performance as one bad game, ask yourself when was the last time McFadden had a memorable performance. We can no longer blame McFadden’s...

The Future Is Now: Terrelle Pryor Looks Like Franchise Quarterback

I don’t want to get carried away after just one game but Terrelle Pryor looks like he can be the answer to the Oakland Raiders quarterback problems. Pryor still makes frustrating mental mistakes that cost the Raiders the game on Sunday, but his explosive playmaking ability makes him an invaluable player for the silver and black. What makes Pryor’s performance more impressive...

Oakland Raiders Defense Must Stay Aggressive Against Jacksonville Jaguars

Despite a 21-17 loss to the Indianapolis Colts, the Oakland Raiders showed it has developed what it has been lacking for the past few seasons – the ability to rush the passer. Defensive coordinator Jason Tarver’s squad sacked Andrew Luck four times and recorded five tackles for loss of yards. Unfortunately, they couldn’t make one crucial stop on defense which allowed...

Breaking Down Darren McFadden’s (Weak) One Performance

I wrote an article yesterday saying that Darren McFadden is no longer a star player for the Oakland Raiders. Tonight I re-watched the game film of McFadden’s week one performance and my opinion on him has not changed. On Sunday McFadden carried the ball 17 times for 48 yards which game him a pathetic 2.8 yards per carry. McFadden was also not a major factor in the passing game...

10 Lessons We Learned From NFL Week 1

Week 1 of the highly-anticipated 2013 NFL regular season is in the books.  As expected, we witnessed just about everything but the kitchen sink—from hard-nosed defensive snoozefests like the Seattle Seahawks’ 12-7 road win over the Carolina Panthers to exciting thrillers that left fans on edge of their seats like the San Francisco 49ers‘ 34-28 victory over the Green Bay Packers...

Terrelle Pryor puts up big numbers

No one had any idea how Terrelle Pryor would play in the Raiders opener against the Colts today. The good news for Oakland is that Pryor played well and put them in position to win, but they ended up losing a close game. Pryor completed 19 of 29 passes for 217 yards, 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions.  He also ran for 112 yards on 13 carries. Even though the Raiders lost,  you have...

A total of Nine black quarterbacks will start week 1

We all know the game is changing. It is becoming a position of speed and agilty rather than just a gun slinger mentality at the quarterback position. Well this week in the NFL a total of 9 black quarterbacks will start. Here is a list: EJ Manuel – Bills Colin Kaepernick – Niners Russell Wilson […]

Terrelle Pryor Knocks Over Sideline Official, Offers No Apology, Has Tattoos

Terrelle Pryor, default starting QB for the Raiders showed us all just how little he respected the people who work so hard 2 make this NFL game enjoyable for fans when he technically asssaulted a sideline reporter and didnt offer him a handup a friendly smile or even a autograph’s he’ll give to anyone with a sterile needle and a barb wire template. This poor guys old enough to...

Pryor's miscues cost Raiders in 21-17 loss at Indy

Terrelle Pryor threw for 217 yards, one touchdown and broke a franchise record Sunday. That wasn't good enough for Oakland's new quarterback. After watching Andrew Luck scramble 19 yards for the go-ahead score with 5:20 to go, Pryor made two costly mistakes on the Raiders' final series. Oakland wound up losing 21-17 at Indianapolis. ''I'm disappointed in...

Rail collapse injures 2 fans at Colts-Raiders game

Two football fans were injured Sunday at Indianapolis when a rail collapsed after Indianapolis defeated Oakland 21-17. Colts spokesman Avis Roper said there was no immediate word on how severely the fans were injured. Those nearby said the fans were leaning against a railing above the tunnel used by the Oakland Raiders. When it gave way, the fans fell onto the walkway that led...

Pryor wants to repay Al Davis

Terrelle Pryor may have finally arrived. Yes Pryor still struggles to read defenses, and makes most of his plays with his legs, but Pryor is a long way from the guy he was when he was banished by Ohio State, and selected in the supplemental draft. Pryor has come a long way and has Al Davis to thank.  According to Peter King and TheMMQB, Pryor says “he owes Davis, and wants to...

QB Pryor should start for Raiders

The Oakland Raiders got one of their two biggest offensive playmakers back at practice. Quarterback Terrelle Pryor returned to practice Wednesday and was working with the first team after missing last week's game with a concussion, while running back Darren McFadden is still sidelined by a hamstring injury that prevented him from finishing last week's game. The Raiders...

Why is the bar so low for Terrelle Pryor?

Everyone doubts Terrelle Pryor can help the Raiders this season, and I think a lot of people have happily gone along with this assessment, because haha, the Raiders, amirite? Pryor won the starting job from Matt Flynn this preseason, but around the league, he hasn’t received many plaudits and hasn’t mustered much confidence. But why? What’s the reason nobody thinks Pryor is...

Terrelle Pryor takes out one of the chain gang diving for first down

Oakland Raiders quarterback Terrelle Pryor showed exactly why he won the starting job during his debut against the Indianapolis Colts.  Pryor finished 19/29 for 217 yards with 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions while adding 112 yards on the ground on 13 carries.  During this run he dove for the first down and leveled this old man that was a part of the chain gang on the sidelines...
