After an interesting preseason, the Eagles first two games looked like a cake walk and then a tough match-up with a team that many believe will represent the AFC in the Super Bowl. The cake walk didn’t exactly go as planned but the tough game ended up as advertised.

In two short weeks, we’ve learned a lot about this team. To begin with, we’ve seen that Michael Vick is still terribly inconsistent. He made some absolutely amazing throws against the Ravens but had some real head scratchers against the Browns.

Vick’s consistency has become as big of a concern as his health. We’ve seen how good he can be. However, he hasn’t proved that he can play that way for an extended period of time. I really think he wants to continue improving, so I hope that he keeps spending a lot of time in the film room and learning from his early mistakes.

Going back to Vick’s health, you have to be concerned about the offensive line. They haven’t been a great unit so far and now will be losing their man in the middle, Jason Kelce, for an extended period of time. Kelce had a strong rookie season and looked poised to build on that in 2012.

It will be interesting to see if the Eagles change up their game plan this week and try to get the ball out of Vick’s hands quicker. I’d also like to see some screens to LeSean McCoy more often. They killed teams with it last year, so why haven’t we seen it more this season?

The defense has been a pleasant surprise. I was excited to see DeMeco Ryans and Mychal Kendricks on the field and they haven’t disappointed. It’s nice to actually see some solid linebacker play from someone in an Eagles jersey. Ryans’ leadership has also been apparent early and its something the defense really lacked last year.

The safety position was my biggest concern on the defensive side of the ball coming into the season. Nate Allen and Kurt Coleman have performed pretty well through the first two games. I think there is still some room for improvement there, but they’ve definitely been serviceable.

Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie has also proved that trading away Asante Samuel was the right thing to do. I don’t think many people doubted that, but it’s good to see the decision come to fruition.

Overall, I’m pretty happy with the first two weeks of the regular season. The Browns game was ugly, but I think the team showed some character and the defense was tremendous. They beat a really solid team this week, and again, the defense showed up when they really needed to.

I do have some concern about the offense with the rash of injuries going around, but every team has to overcome adversity. It’s been a good start and hopefully the Birds will continue to build on it.
