About this time two years ago, the Pittsburgh Steelers ended building speculation and awarded head coach Mike Tomlin with a two-year contract extension through the 2013 season. That trend was nothing new for the Steelers, who have a history of negotiating extensions with their coaches at that point of their contracts; a tradition that started after former head coach Bill Cowher succeeded Chuck Noll as their coach in 1992.When fans fast-forward to present day, they should not find it surprising to see the Steelers and Tomlin reach another extension in the upcoming weeks. Tomlin is one of the most successful head coaches in the NFL and has quietly retooled an aging franchise into a younger and potentially more talented unit than the one he inherited from Cowher.

// > In fact, if you look deeply at the moves made by the Steelers this offseason, you can see they were made by a coaching staff and front office with job security.  Everything from cutting aging veterans who were fan favorites, to drafting (and potentially starting) two high-round offensive linemen (one with character concerns) to even persuading line backers coach Keith Butler to pass on a chance to become a defensive coordinator to stay with the Steelers give that impression. When and if that extension occurs, Tomlin will look to build on his impressive 55-25 record (60-28 overall), with one Super Bowl Championship, two AFC Championships, three AFC North Titles and four playoff births in five NFL seasons.   Also, Be sure to "like" Steelers 101 on Facebook and to follow Steelers 101 on Twitter Text "oneteam" to 20222 to donate $10 to the One Team for the Lights charity initiative.
