Quinton Patton had a nice debut for the San Francisco 49ers in their third preseason game. He showed exactly why the team was high on him in organized team activities and throughout training camp. Some scouts I talked to felt he was a polished receiver that’s ready to make an impact. A group of receivers were thrown into the mix to compete for the starting spot vacated by Michael Crabtree, who went down with an Achilles injury and will be out until at least November. The original candidates included Marlon Moore, Patton, A.J. Jenkins and Ricardo Lockette, but only Moore and Patton are still on the roster. Moore has gotten most of the reps with the first team offense and has seemingly secured the starting spot for now. Patton may have made a move on the starting position, but after breaking his middle finger while catching a throw from Colt McCoy, the rookie could only run routes in team activities and wasn’t able to show off his hands. I was quite surprised Patton dropped to the fou...

My Takes on the Backup Quarterback, and Receiver Situation for the San Francisco 49ers

I’ve said before that I don’t take a lot from preseason. I take more heed in practice, if the player can execute the plays given against the defense that knows the offensive plays the best, as they see them every day in practice. I use the A.J Jenkins example, how was he going to execute the plays in the game if he couldn’t even do it in practice. However, I must admit, preseason...

Austin Collie Not In The 49ers’ Plans?

According to Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle, veteran WR Austin Collie is not a part of the 49ers plans moving forward. Branch notes that Jim Harbaugh indicated during the team’s training camp that Collie is hasn’t fully recovered from the ruptured patella tendon injury he suffered last year. On top of that, Collie only received 14 snaps during Sunday’s preseason...

Scott Tolzien waived by 49ers

Back-up quarterback Scott Tolzien was among five players waived by the 49ers on Monday. Here’s how it went down: OK, you got me. That’s not how it really went down because Scott Tolzien isn’t a British dude named Tim. Unless Tolzien has some previous former life as an international spy for MI6 he’s not telling anybody about. But the clip still applies because he was arguably...

Rookie safety Reid earns starting job with 49ers

Veteran safety Donte Whitner has insisted all along that rookie Eric Reid possesses the skills and mentality to be a hard-hitting defender and fill the huge void left by Dashon Goldson's departure in free agency. Apparently, coach Jim Harbaugh and defensive coordinator Vic Fangio agreed. They named Reid the NFC champion Niners' starter Tuesday at free safety for the Sept...

Kaepernick, 49ers down Vikings

The familiar formula that carried San Francisco back to the Super Bowl last season for the first time in 18 years is on display again. Colin Kaepernick marched the offense with six straight completions during a series that ended with a 5-yard touchdown pass to Quinton Patton, and Aldon Smith and Justin Smith plowed through Minnesota's offensive line to make plays and hard-hitting...
