Entering his second year in Tennessee, offensive coordinator Chris Palmer was tasked with starting a young, somewhat unproven quarterback, reviving a once record-setting running back, and incorporating a rookie receiver into an inconsistent passing attack.

It goes without saying that Palmer has his work cut out for him, especially after the team's 34-13 blowout loss to the Patriots in Sunday's regular season opener.

Save for a few nice drives, the Titans failed to get much going against New England's exploitable defense. The biggest disappointment was the lack of the run game, with Chris Johnson managing a horrendous four yards on 11 carries.

The lack of production apparently was viewed as an abject failure by the players, as ProFootballTalk.com hears there's "grumbling" surrounding Palmer and his resume.

Palmer, 62, has spent more than 20 years as an NFL coach, including serving as the quarterbacks coach for the 2007 Super Bowl champion Giants. However, he's never lasted longer than four years with any team, and chose to dabble in retirement following the 2009 season.

Although it's easy to point fingers, Palmer isn't fully to blame for the offense's ineptitude. Coaches coach and players play, and the latter wasn't executed so well. QB Jake Locker held the ball too long, the receivers failed to gain consistent separation, Johnson couldn't hit the hole fast enough, and the linemen weren't getting enough push.

When Locker and receiver Nate Washington were lost to injury, the game was well out of reach, so the results and accompanying determinations are skewed.

Palmer and Co. will have a chance to right the wrongs next week against the Chargers. The return of suspended/injured wideout Kenny Britt should help boost the unit and put points on the board.

Winning cures all in this league. By this time next week, this "story" may be a thing of the past.
