It seems like many moons ago, but in fact it was barely a half-decade ago that Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story took the sport out of the elementary school gyms of the country and into the national spotlight. Prime example: Extreme Dodgeball, which premiered on Game Show Network in 2004, pitting loosely themed teams of baller cronies against each other. By season three the show was big enough--or just desparate enough, perhaps--to start attracting some big names to helm the big teams. Chief among them: Eagles linebacker Jeremiah Trotter, apparently not too busy in the off-season to earn a little coin on the side, who was announced on June 14th as captain of the Philadelphia Benjamins fo the third season, under nickname "The Axeman".
"Those balls hurt when they hit you--especially if you get hit in the face," said Trotter, obviously not used to playing such a physical, demanding sport. "I skinned my knee yesterday dodging for a ball, but that's the nature of the sport." Unfortunately, giving the game his all wasn't quite enough for Trotter's Benjamins, as the season's championship eventually went to the New York Bling, led by boxer/model/Tae Kwon Do champ Mia St. John. On the plus side, Trotter responded wih a Pro Bowl year, with a career-high 102 tackles during the 2005 season--though within two years, his career in both football and dodgeball were over, and Trotter became primarily a tri-state area car wash owner.
Coming up next summer: Stewart Bradley guest starring on Celebrity Tetherball.
