Tony Gonzalez returned to football this season in hopes of winning a Super Bowl title. That goal now seems fairly unlikely. After coming within a few yards of a Super Bowl berth last season, the Atlanta Falcons started this year just 1-4 and have already lost a few key players, including wide receiver Julio Jones, for the season. Nevermind their Super Bowl hopes, now the Falcons are a long shot to even make the playoffs. Even still, Gonzalez has no intention of going anywhere, saying he would not request a trade this season, according to Paul Newberry of the Associated Press. “I want to be with these guys,” Gonzalez said on Thursday. Gonzalez, 37, has already said multiple times that this will be his final NFL season, even though he continues to perform like one of the best tight ends in football. The Falcons’ brutal start paired with Gonzo’s final farewell have led to rampant rumors that Atlanta could, and should, trade the future Hall of Fame tight end to a contender — namely his ...

Gonzalez victim of illegal tactics, inconsistent officiating

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. -- At times this season Falcons future hall of fame tight end Tony Gonzalez has had to contend with some new tactics -- some legal and some perhaps not -- and varying officiating standards, which appear to have left him befuddled at times as to what in fact the rules are.At the conclusion of the Falcons' season-opening 23-17 loss at New Orleans, Saints defenders...

Atlanta Falcons: A new start

This Sunday, 1 PM ET, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (0-5) travel to the Georgia Dome to face off the Atlanta Falcons (1-4). The Falcons have had a rough season so far with only win coming from a 31-24 win against the St. Louis Rams in week two. Falcons Tony Gonzalez: “I didn’t ask for a trade. That wasn’t me”

Atlanta Falcons tight end Tony Gonzalez is aware of the trade rumors. “I’m still happy as I can be to be a Falcon” Gonzalez said. “I know there were trade rumors out there. I didn’t ask for a trade. That wasn’t me. I signed up and this is the team that … I came back to play with these guys on the team. And I’m enjoying myself win lose or draw. “Obviously I’d...

Falcons without Roddy White, Steven Jackson in practice

The ailing Atlanta Falcons returned to practice Tuesday following their Week 6 bye but without some familiar faces Atlanta hoped to have back now. The NFL’s Top 10 Most Devastating Injuries Thus Far

(Football Schedule Flickr Page) Being the violent sport that it is, it really should not come as a shock to anyone that football has…well…a lot of injuries. To make it through an entire year without missing a game or two due to a sprained this or a sore that is considered extremely lucky.  And those are just the tiny, nagging injuries.  The big ones tend to nab key players...

Ryan says Falcons leaning on even-keeled Smith

Mike Smith is facing the biggest challenge of his six seasons as the Falcons' coach. The Falcons never lost back-to-back regular-season games during Smith's first five seasons. Suddenly, the Falcons have lost three straight games as they prepare for Sunday's visit from Tampa Bay. Matt Ryan and other players say it has been important to see Smith's demeanor remain...

Falcons' White to sit Sunday, snapping 133-game streak

The Atlanta Falcons ruled out wide receiver Roddy White for Sundays game against Tampa Bay, meaning the four-time Pro Bowler will miss the first game of his career, ending the sixth-longest active streak among non-kickers. White had played in 133 straight games, but a seasonlong right ankle injury, combined with a left hamstring malady, will keep him out against the Buccaneers....

Falcons Release Safety Shann Schillinger

The veteran safety spent parts of three seasons in Atlanta. Shann Schillinger was one of the Falcons I fully expected to get the axe this off-season given that the Falcons drafted two intriguing young safety prospects in Kemal Ishmael and Zeke Motta. That axe didn't come until seven weeks into the season. This is a surprise at this point in the season. The Falcons held on to...

Gameday preview: Atlanta Falcons vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

ATLANTA, GA- The winless Tampa Bay Buccaneers are coming to the Georgia Dome on Sunday, October 20, 1:00 p.m. to face the Atlanta Falcons in what will surely be a tough division matchup for both teams. The game will be featured on the FOX network. For both teams, this 2013 season can almost be loosely compared to Charles Dickens’s A Tale of Two Cities. “”It was the best of...

WR Roddy White to miss game for 1st time in career

Atlanta Falcons receiver Roddy White will miss the first game of his nine-year career on Sunday. The four-time Pro Bowl selection was one of three starters listed as out on Friday's injury report. The Atlanta Falcons have ruled out receiver Roddy White and running back Steven Jackson for Sunday’s game against the last place Buccaneers. Falcons Waive Safety Shann Schillinger

Shann Schillinger’s release can only mean the Falcons are making a move soon. (Kevin C. Cox) The Atlanta Falcons have waived safety Shann Schillinger. Schillinger was selected in the sixth round of the 2010 NFL Draft. He was primarily a special teamer, recording 13 tackles in 36 games. His release opens up a roster spot for the Falcons. Expect a move to fill that roster spot soon...

Falcons WR Roddy White to miss first game of career

If you thought the Falcons offense was going to have an easy time when it faces the winless Buccaneers this weekend you might want to rethink that idea. You already know that Julio Jones is out for the season but there was more bad news for Atlanta on Friday when the team announced that Roddy White has been ruled out with hamstring and ankle injuries. Along with White whose streak...

Bucs defense to keep eye on Falcons TE Gonzalez

For most of his glittering 17-year pro career Tony Gonzalez has been a marked man on fall Sundays. Don’t expect that to change in the Georgia Dome against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The 13-time Pro Bowl tight end might be Atlanta’s only proven threat in the passing game as the winless Bucs face the equally desperate Falcons (1-4). Leading receiver Julio Jones is already out...

Buccaneers-Falcons Preview

The Atlanta Falcons and Tampa Bay Buccaneers have had plenty of trouble staying healthy during their difficult starts to this season, but the Falcons suffered perhaps the most significant loss before their bye week.
