The father of Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Jason Avant was killed in a car accident in New Jersey on Thursday. Jerry Avant, 51, lost control of his SUV on a wet road and crashed into some trees. Police told the Burlington County Times that he was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. A passenger was taken to the hospital with injuries. Jason Avant has been with the Eagles since the team drafted him in the fourth round in 2006. He was voted the winner of the team’s Ed Block Courage award for 2010 after he revealed that he spent time as a drug dealer and a member of a gang before turning his life around and focusing on football.
