DAVIE, Fla. Joe Philbin strolled through the Dolphins locker room Friday during the post-practice media availability period. The Miami coach noticed center Mike Pouncey alone in front of his cubicle. Nobodys talking to you today, Mike? Philbin asked with a smile as he continued through the room. Philbins friendly jab came a day after Pouncey delivered a few verbal blows, the latest in an exchange of trash talking between the Dolphins and New York Jets heading into Sundays showdown at MetLife Stadium. Pouncey ripped Jets linebacker Aaron Maybin and called him a joke after Maybin was quoted saying, "We want to knock (Reggie Bush) out, but we're out to do it legally." The war of words between the two teams actually started before the teams first meeting, which the Jets won 23-20 in OT at Sun Life Stadium on Sept. 23. Jets coach Rex Ryan said his team wanted to put some "hot sauce" on Bush. After the game, during which New York cornerback Darrelle Revis suffered a season-ending knee injury, Bush said: "What goes around comes around." The funny thing is, a Dolphins-Jets game shouldnt need verbal enhancements to motivate the participants. The teams are AFC East Division rivals who have produced many memorable moments. Remember A. J. Duhes performance to help Miami beat New York in the 1983 AFC title game, aka the Mud Bowl? Or Dan Marinos faked spike in Miamis 1994 road victory? How about the Jets 40-37 OT win in 2000 after trailing 30-7 in the third quarter? Even more relevant in 2012, the Dolphins are 3-3 and the Jets are 3-4 in a hotly contested division with New England (4-3) and Buffalo (3-4). Still, boys will be boys. Most teams have at least one or two players who find it hard to shy away from a little verbal sparring. Philbin said he did not tell his players to cool the comments. He added he doesnt like to rule with a lot of donts. The rookie head coach addressed trash talking in a different way. I just reminded the team why were getting on a plane (Saturday) at 12:45, Philbin said. Each person who gets on the plane, whether youre in the PR department, the trainer, the equipment man, the coach, the player you have a responsibility to one another. All this other stuff isnt really related to the game at 1 oclock. I certainly reminded them of that. The Dolphins either bought into Philbins message or didnt need the reminder. We dont pay any attention to the trash talking. We just focus on us, cornerback Nolan Carroll said. We dont need to get into that because we do our talking on the field. We dont listen to it. Its a distraction, wide receiver Davone Bess said. Were just going to play. At least one Dolphin admitted to knowing the score. Wide receiver Brian Hartline even called the trash talking funny. I read the stories back and forth, the jabs but a lot of times things are taken out of context, he said. I think thats probably what happened to Maybin, He just meant, Were going to take Reggie Bush out of the game in a scheme kind of way and try to prevent him from making big plays. Not necessarily injuring the guy. A Dolphin defending a Jet? Wonder what Pouncey would say about that?
