Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo has often been compared to Brett Favre because of his high risk, high reward style of play.  Now, ex-Cowboys great Troy Aikman is adding another link between Romo and Favre.  According to Aikman, it’s time for Dallas to mimic the draft strategy that the Green Bay Packers used during much of Favre’s career. “I like the way the Packers did it for all those years,” Aikman said in an interview on NFL.com (via Dallas Morning News). “To bring a guy in, essentially every season, whether you draft him in the fourth round, or fifth round, or third round, whatever it might be, I think there’s something to be said for that. “I don’t think they (the Cowboys) need another quarterback, to make that clear, but because of Tony’s age, they certainly have to start addressing who the guy is going to be that comes in after him.”  Aikman added.  “If there’s a guy that they can pick up and maybe develop in the third, fourth round, I think that’s a real positive thing for them.” Romo will turn 33 this offseason.  Aikman may have used the Green Bay Packers as an example to support his opinion on the Cowboys’ need to plan for the future at quarterback, but Aikman could have made the same point by pointing out how poorly Dallas planned for the future when he was the team’s quarterback. Dallas hasn’t spent a first-round pick on a quarterback since drafting Aikman in 1989.  After Aikman retired in 2000, Dallas rolled out a cast of characters under center that included Chad Hutchinson, Quincy Carter, Drew Henson, and Vinny Testaverde before Romo made his debut in 2005. But for Romo’s emergence, Dallas could easily have been doomed to suffer the same plight that the Bills and Dolphins have experienced for over a decade after both teams failed to adequately prepare for Jim Kelly and Dan Marino’s retirements.  Since Romo became the team’s starter, Dallas has only drafted one quarterback, Texas A&M’s Stephen McGee in the 4th round back in 2009. Given the premium placed on quarterbacks in today’s NFL, Dallas can’t bank on discovering another undrafted free agent quarterback like Romo to eventually replace Romo himself.  Perhaps Jerry Jones and company should follow Aikman’s advice on this one.
