Just like that, the New York Giants, famous for their signature expertise in getting after the quarterback, are suddenly finding themselves looking to fill a huge void in that department before the season begins. As if losing Osi Umenyora wasn't enough, Jason Pierre-Paul, their leading pass-rusher last season, will be out for a while with a herniated disc that he'll need surgery for. Best case scenario is that he could return in time for the season opener, but that's likely just wishful thinking. "I’m hoping, but I wouldn’t say that,” Coughlin said, via Tom Pedulla of the New York Times. “That is an aggressive position to take. If anybody can do it, it is him. But I would like to wait and see.” All hope would seem to rest on 8-year veteran Mathias Kiwanuka, who'll switch over to defensive end from his previous linebacker position. The transition should be smooth enough for Kiwanuka. “That was the position I came into this league playing, and I’m looking forward to the opportunity,” he said. “Obviously, we would love to have [Pierre-Paul] back, and I’m sure he’ll be back ready to go at a certain point. But we’re not going to rush him back for any reason.” Other options worth experimenting with are Adrian Tracy and rookie Damontre Moore. “I’m really pleased with where Tracy is,” DL coach Robert Nunn said. “He’s farther along than he has been.”  “Damontre came in and flashed some good things. He’s got a long way to go, a lot to learn in a short time,” he added.
