Saturday saw the season for two New England Patriots come to an end.

Offensive lineman Robert Gallery, signed as insurance while Logan Mankins recovers from ACL surgery, called it a career Saturday. Gallery was having a rough training camp and was noticeably overpowered by Vince Wilfork in one-on-one drills.

The veteran spent his first seven years with the Oakland Raiders after being selected second overall in the 2004 NFL Draft and played for the Seattle Seahawks in 2011.

Gallery's absence means the Patriots are thin at guard, with Mankins still recovering and veteran Brian Waters yet to report to camp.

Dan Connolly's versatility will no doubt come in handy as the Patriots try to piece together an effective line to protect quarterback Tom Brady.

In addition to Gallery's retirement, fullback Tony Fiammetta was placed on the exempt/left squad list for 2012, making him ineligible to play for the team this season.

Sources claim he has to take care of issues with his family, but looks to play for the Patriots in 2013.

The move is not a devastating one for the Pats, as they have always been creative with using players of all positions in short-yardage situations and did not even carry a traditional fullback on the roster last season.

The herd will continue to thin as we march toward the opening kickoff of the 2012 season. Stay tuned to Patriots 101 for all of the comings and goings in the weeks to come.
