Will Nick Foles be able to perform with the weight of the Eagles franchise on his back? Michael Vick is still feeling the effects of a substantial concussion, and will not be ready for Sunday, and may not be ready to play for quite some time. That leaves the Philadelphia Eagles at 3-6 with their rookie QB Nick Foles set to take over the reins. I’m sure Foles will try to say something like this is “just another game.” The reality is that there is a lot riding on Foles, and it’s probably more than just for this week. With Vick on the shelf, it appears as though Foles’ time to shine is upon us. Many fans were calling for Foles even before this team went on a 5 game losing streak. Now, the fates have made the decision that Andy Reid could not. More than just a shot to get to 4-6 rides on tomorrow’s game with the Washington Redskins. At this point it’s almost impossible for the Eagles to make the playoffs, so this becomes more about the future now. Can Nick Foles play in the NFL? Can he be the quarterback of the future for the Philadelphia Eagles? Will Andy Reid be able to save his job? Will Michael Vick be an Eagle next year? All of those questions are related. Michael Vick will probably not be a Philadelphia Eagle next year no matter what happens going forward. Vick carries a significant price tag for a player who will be 33 and who has performed below expectations. Michael Vick is tied to Andy Reid. The shelf life of each depends on the other. Both are failing. But even if Reid can save his job, I don’t see any scenario where Michael Vick saves his. I don’t doubt Michael Vick’s will to win. I don’t doubt his toughness either. The man is a warrior no matter what you say about him. He’s played behind a terrible offensive line and has gotten pummeled all season long, but hasn’t complained. What I do doubt is Michael Vick’s decision making and his ability to win. Andy Reid has a great reputation for developing QBs. Nick Foles will need to be developed. The question is will Andy be able to work his magic in a short amount of time and get this kid to a point where he can win in the NFL and get Reid another year to fix this team? Time will tell. The truth is that Nick Foles will have his future, plus the future of Andy Reid and Michael Vick on his shoulders as well tomorrow when he makes his first NFL start. That’s a lot of weight.
