As the NFL's free agency period nears next week, the Minnesota Vikings continued to create salary-cap space Thursday. The club announced it has released both defensive tackle Letroy Guion and wide receiver Greg Childs. Guion, a 6-foot-4, 303-pound defensive tackle drafted in the fifth round by the Vikings in 2008, showed flashes at times during his pro career. The 26-year-old Florida State product recorded five career sacks in six seasons with Minnesota. Last season, Guion had 21 tackles, one sack and one forced fumble, playing largely in a run-stopping capacity. Guion played in 68 career games in Minnesota and started 28 contests over the last two seasons. Childs' departure from Minnesota is less surprising. Although the 23-year-old, 6-foot-3 receiver looked like a prototypical pass-catcher, his Vikings career never got off the ground. After getting drafted in the fourth round out of Arkansas in 2012, Childs endured a gruesome training-camp injury that August, when he leapt for a pass during an intrasquad scrimmage and ended up rupturing his patellar tendon in both knees. He spent the 2013 season on the physically unable to perform list. Guion had one year left on his contract with Minnnesota and a $4.3 million salary-cap number; releasing him will grant the Vikings a total of $4 million in cap savings. Childs had a cap number of $735,146; releasing him saves the Vikings $660,000. Following this week's personnel moves, the Vikings now have slightly more than $41 million available in cap space. Teams can begin talking to prospective NFL free agents on Saturday, though free agents cannot officially sign with a team until March 11.
