According to Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press, the Vikings will consider signing Panthers free agent G Travelle Wharton, depending on what happens with G Charlie Johnson.
Vikings GM Rick Spielman recently mentioned that he would like to re-sign G Charlie Johnson this offseason, but he supposedly as interest from the other NFL teams.
“I think the more depth you can accumulate on that offensive line, it really helps your ballclub,” Spielman said, via the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. “That’s an area that we’ll probably address in the draft as well.”
Wharton, 32, mentioned that he’s still undecided as to whether or not he’ll be back next season.
“I’m really just enjoying my family time right now,” he said, via the Charlotte Observer. “I don’t want to say I’m done and I don’t want to say I’m going to keep playing for another five or six years. I don’t know.“
Wharton is arguably the best available guard in the free agent market. According to Pro Football Focus, he was the No. 6 guard in the league last year and was very solid in both run and pass-protecting.
The Panthers could use some offensive line help now that they have lost to two guys to retirement, but they are reportedly waiting for value in the free agent market.
