EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. The Minnesota Vikings plan to use a couple of former Notre Dame tight ends in their two tight-end sets next season. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Wednesday that Minnesota signed former Seattle Seahawks tight end John Carlson to a five-year, 25 million deal. Carlson, a Litchfield, Minn. native, had 137 catches in his first three seasons after being drafted by Seattle in the second round of the 2008 draft. He missed the entire 2011 season with a shoulder injury. Carlson, 27, will join second-year pro Kyle Rudolph to give the Vikings a pair of receiving threats at the tight end position. Visanthe Shiancoe, 31, is an unrestricted free agent and wasn't expected to re-sign in Minnesota with Vikings general manager Rick Spielman trying to infuse more youth into his rebuilding team. Minnesota also had longtime veteran tight end Jim Kleinsasser retire after the season. Mickey Shuler and Allen Reisner, who have combined for just three NFL catches, were the only other tight ends on the current roster. In his rookie campaign, Carlson caught 55 passes for five touchdowns while starting nine of his 16 games. He started every game in his sophomore season and caught 51 passes for seven touchdowns. He slipped to 31 catches and just one touchdown in 2010, playing in 15 games. It was the first signing from the Vikings since the free agency period began on Tuesday at 3 p.m. The team re-signed defensive tackle Letroy Guion Tuesday afternoon to a three-year contract.
