The Washington Redskins have been facing increased pressure recently to change their name because some believe it holds an offensive Native American connotation. The team proudly defended its nickname in a story published on its official website on Monday. However, their reasoning will likely leave most folks scratching their heads.In the story on redskins.com, Washington uses quotes from two public high school leaders to defend the "Redskins" name. Both administrators work in the state of Ohio, but neither one has any affiliation at all with the National Football League. Therefore, their comments probably don't hold much credibility either."We are very proud of our athletic teams and very proud to be called Redskins!" Coshocton High School athletic director George Hemming was quoted in saying in the opening sentence of the piece.Steve Cowser, Principal at Indian Creek High School, explained how the Redskins name shows "pride for the Native Americans and how they lived."The team also cited the fact that they found 70 different high schools in the country who use the Redskins name as their mascot, too. Additionally, the article states that 75 schools use the name "Cowboys", and another 19 schools use the name "Giants."No other person was quoted in the article, not even a member of the Washington franchise. Basically, the organization used two random government employees to justify their use of the Redskins name. Oh, and neither of them reside anywhere near the Washington D.C. area.Yes, the story is puzzling to say the least.Via USA TODAY
