According to Jason La Canfora of NFL Network, Washington will use their franchise tag on Fred Davis. Washington’s tight end was suspended 4 games last season for violating the NFL’s substance-abuse policy. Head Coach, Mike Shanahan was not happy about the incident that also included 2nd yr LT, Trent Williams. However, has faith the two talented players mature and learn from their past mistakes. With the franchise tag, Davis will make $5.5 million, fully guaranteed in 2012. After having an outstanding season before the suspension (59 receptions, 796 yards and 3 touchdowns), that’s rather cheap. This is a smart move by the Redskins. Fred Davis was one of the few playmakers on offense, and if he continues to mature, could be a Pro Bowl caliber player (for whatever that’s worth). With Washington using their franchise tag on Fred Davis, this could be the “writing on the wall” for safety, Laron Landry.
