The first round of preseason NFL games is upon us! Here’s a list of meaningful story lines to watch as week one of the preseason gets under way later tonight. Patriots’ receivers Much has been made of the Patriots’ no-name crew of receivers. Sure, they won’t be catching balls from Tom Brady, but that’s no reason to look past the Patriots’ matchup against the Eagles Friday evening. If nothing else, we’ll at least be able to see if the Patriots’ receivers can catch and run routes. Mark Sanchez vs. Geno Smith In a week we normally wouldn’t see much from starting quarterbacks, there are a couple of guys on the bubble we expect to see a little more out of. Mark Sanchez will be the Jets’ starter for their preseason opener, but his play in exhibition action will go a long way towards determining his fate, and is more than enough reason to tune in. The game is in Detroit, so don’t expect too much Sanchez booing from the fans. Blaine Gabbert vs. Chad Henne The other quarterback s...

New York Jets: Mark Sanchez named starter for preseason opener

Rex Ryan has named Mark Sanchez the starting quarterback for Friday nights preseason game in Detroit. However, Geno Smith will still se some snaps with the first team offense. Mark Sanchez will get the first shot at proving he deserves to be the starter. Marty Mornhinweg and Rex Ryan agreed that Mark Sanchez deserved the first chance in the preseason to prove he deserves to be the...

Ex-Jets wideout criticizes Sanchez

It's not getting any easier for Mark Sanchez. Former Jets wide receiver Chaz Schilens didn't mince words when it came to his ex-quarterback. "Really, when it came down to it, I kind of felt like they were looking for scapegoats and besides everyone except for, you know, maybe the quarterback position, and it was what it was," Schilens told USA Today on Wednesday...

Jets' Sanchez: 'I earned right to start' vs. Lions

Mark Sanchez says he ''earned the right to start'' the New York Jets' preseason opener at Detroit on Friday night. The quarterback, in a tightly contested competition with rookie Geno Smith, says Wednesday that he thinks he's putting together a good training camp and never thinks about not playing - even in the preseason. Rex Ryan and Marty Mornhinweg announced...

Quarterback Expectations: Mallett vs. Tebow Time

With Tom Brady unlikely to play more than one or two series tonight, the quarterbacking focus will fall on the team's backups: Ryan Mallett and Tim Tebow. With the preseason being (hopefully) the only chance for fans and coaches to get an extensive look at the backups in live game action, these reps will be important opportunities for both players to impress the coaching staff...

Patrick Chung loving the Philly lifestyle

Last year, Patrick Chung was a go to guy for Brady and the Patriots. This year, well not so much. Yesterday at practice, he spent much of the day breaking up a skirmish between the teams in 11 v. 11 drills, but the Philly safeties spent the day in another way, getting destroyed by Patriots QB Tom Brady. According to the Boston Herald, Chung believes that his former team will be just...

Lions 26, Jets 17

Ziggy Ansah looked like a natural in his exhibition debut, when the rookie defensive end picked off Mark Sanchez's screen pass and took it back for a touchdown. Detroit coach Jim Schwartz wasn't at all surprised. ''I know a lot of people were looking at us sideways when we drafted a guy that didn't have a whole lot of experience,'' Schwartz said after...

Patriots Running Game: 2013 Edition

Photo Credit: Chitose Suzuki, Boston Herald Chitose Suzuki In 2012, the Patriots ran more plays and scored more points than any team in the league. While much of their offense came from quarterback Tom Brady and the passing attack, New England did a surprising amount of damage on the ground. In fact, Seattle was the only team in the entire league with more rushing attempts. To be...

Tom Brady on receivers: ‘I’m probably a pain in their butt’

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady says the offense isn’t were he would like it to be, but they’re “making progress.” “I think it’s better than what it was when we started and I think that’s the important thing,” said Brady during his Tuesday press conference. “We’ve got to keep building. We’re four weeks from our first game, so we’ve got to use very...

Take a tour of Tom Brady & Gisele Bundchen’s mega mansion

Tom Brady and Gisele Bundchen’s California mansion has been in the news ever since construction on the massive 22,000-square-foot house was started a few years ago. When it was finished earlier this year, the moat that surrounds it became a big story on the Internets and everybody had their fun. The house is back in the headlines this week after developers posted photos of the...

The Tale of Three Quarterbacks: Brady the Great, Mallett the Marginal, and Tebow the Terrible.

The New England Patriots handily took care of the Philadelphia Eagles in their first preseason game (see the recap by Joe Loubier here). Per usual for Bill, we saw very little of Tom Brady - two drives, and only one of which consisted of any pass attempts thanks to Stevan Ridley's 62-yard run. We would have seen more of Ryan Mallett, but his time at the helm of the offense was...

Mixed Emotions over Eagles' PS1 loss to Patriots, 31-22...

This is not a "glass half-full" article. There were problems exposed on the Eagles defense from the get-go. But I'm talking about the defensive problems of the 1's in the first quarter. Overall, the Eagles displayed some very nice development among their defensive backups and new guys as the game plodded on. I totally get how Tom Brady got into our defensive...
