The whole football world is talking about Matt Flynn’s performance from Sunday’s game against the Lions.  His performance was incredible, there is no taking away from that but I want to discuss the two prevailing opinions that have come out from this game.

First of all this performance is going to make Matt Flynn a very sought after free agent.  Remember a couple of years ago when Matt Cassel took over the Patriots after Brady went down with injury and nearly led them to the playoffs and then he got the chance to start for the Chiefs the following season?  Well that is what will happen to Flynn.   Flynn is set to become a free agent after this season and as much as the Packers would like to keep Flynn, his performance on Sunday almost guaranteed him a nice contract to start for another team next year.

What a better way to boost your resume as a backup quarterback than throwing for 480 yards and setting a Green Bay Packers record for passing touchdowns in a game, doing this all in only your second start.  Flynn will get a nice contract and a chance to start and make his own mark on the NFL next season and it is well deserved.

Now to the other aspect of Flynn’s performance I want to discuss.  There have been some who feel that Flynn’s performance is belittling Rodgers season saying that Rodgers is merely a product of an offensive system.  People please; this idea is ludicrous, so stop talking about it.  The Lions give up almost 240 yards passing per game so seeing a quarterback have a big game against them shouldn’t be very shocking.  When they played on Thanksgiving Rodgers threw for 307 yards and two touchdowns.  Lets take a look at these two games more closely.

While Flynn threw for more yards than Rodgers, he also threw the ball 11 more times and completed nine more passes than Rodgers.  Of course Flynn will have more yards because he threw the ball more times than Rodgers.  Flynn also had more yards per completion than Rodgers when you compare the two games.

The first time the Packers played the Lions they ran the ball twice as much as the second game for twice as many yards.  More yards on the ground means less yards in the air for Rodgers.

Look, I’m not trying to take away from what Flynn did.  He is a great quarterback who will have a nice career; he has a lot of talent, he won a national title in college, people seem to forget that.  But to say that Rodgers is just a product of a system is ridiculous.

The MVP still should go to Rodgers, he deserves it.

Two things really came from this game.  The world saw how great Flynn is and because of that Flynn will be a team’s starter next year with a nice amount of money to his name.
