Much will be written about Patriots WR Wes Welker’s contract situation, and much already has. There will be speculation and more speculation, and it’s happening now. The truth is, even the participants don’t know how it will play out.
Will Welker get a long-term deal? The franchise tag? The chance to test the free agent waters with the Patriots hoping he returns? Who knows?
My personal belief is that Welker eventually agrees to a long-term extension, with the Patriots and Welker striking a four-year deal that is structured like a three-year deal (maybe with a huge final-year salary both sides know he won’t be getting). I don’t think Welker will break the bank, either.
And the reason why is something that I keep coming back to. Both sides have spoken about Welker’s situation, with the WR offering words here and owner Robert Kraft speaking here. But to me, the most important thing Welker has ever said happened in October.
