I’d like to start this article with a statistic... according to myfantasyleague.com, Alex Smith was taken 24th among fantasy QBs last year, 148th overall. This year, Colin Kaepernick is being drafted 7th among QBs, 44th overall. What this is means is that what Kaepernick accomplished in 10 games was enough to move him 17 quarterbacks and 104 picks higher than what Smith deserved after 25 games under John Harbaugh.
When he was injured, Smith was third in the NFL in passer rating, and led the league in completion percentage. He was 19-5-1 as a starter under Harbaugh. And yet he was benched in favor of the young Kaepernick.
Which is all well and good, Harbaugh believed that Kaepernick had the hot hand. But he absolutely does not deserve to be drafted this much higher than Smith was last year. Kaepernick was not much better of a quarterback than Smith. Take a look at their 2012 stats:
