For the good of the country let's hope it is really over for #4 this time. Is this the hit that did it? Probably so and I could watch it another 100 times without getting bored.

As far as New Year's sports resolutions are concerned the permanent retirement of Brett Favre would have to be at the top of the list. The dismissal of San Diego head coach Norv Turner would probably be a close second but yesterday the Chargers announced Norvie would be back for another year.

Turner is clearly in over his head as a head coach. However, there are quite a few others in the same boat. One of those guys is current Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey. Evidently Mularkey is being considered as a frontrunner in both Denver and Cleveland right now. I have one simple question: Why?

Have NFL teams forgotten how much of a disaster Mularkey was as a head coach in Buffalo several years ago? The Bills didn't throw a pass longer than 20 yards down the field the entire time he was at the helm. Mularkey actually made Turner look competent. What a joke. I wonder if Kevin Gilbride and Dan Henning are also being considered for head coaching gigs. I guess the coaching carousel is alive and well in the NFL.

A few other things rattling around in my head this afternoon include...

Hank Kingsley is one of the five funniest characters in television history and you will never be able to change my mind. Over the weekend episodes of "The Larry Sanders Show" ran on IFC and I couldn't get enough of Jeffrey Tambor's Kingsley.

What is the next linguistic trend that will sweep the nation? Barack Obama's preference of beginning every other sentence or response with "Look" is old hat now and Jeff Van Gundy's "To Me" is entering the home stretch. Why not Kingsley's "Hey Now"? It's absolutely perfect.

If not "Hey Now" I'd have to put my money on "See" being a part of the American lexicon by May. Just a hunch. You watch, in a few months everyone is going to be beginning sentences with the word see.

What the hell is going on with the Phoenix Suns? Why is Mickael Pietrus starting? Pietrus is a very nice 20-25 minute 6th or 7th man but he should not be starting NBA basketball games. During the past year Pietrus has rarely even bothered to do anything on the offensive end of the floor except shoot three pointers. When the shots are going in he's a real asset but when they aren't he's a virtual non-entity.

At least Channing Frye provides an occasional blocked shot and can guard the opposing team's power forward. Come on Alvin Gentry, get Frye back in the starting lineup and put Pietrus on the bench. The only time Pietrus should start is when either Vince Carter or Grant Hill are injured. Please listen to me or the Suns have no shot of making the playoffs this season.

Finally, I read that the USA Network is one of the three most watched cable channels right now. Really? Who watches USA and what are they watching? I think I've literally watched a total of 90 minutes of USA programing in the past twenty years. No exaggeration. If anyone knows please enlighten me.
