“While We’re Waiting” serves as the early morning gathering of WFNY-esque information for your viewing pleasure. Have something you think we should see? Send it to our tips email at tips@waitingfornextyear.com. “As it stands now, the Browns own nine picks in next year’s draft, behind only San Francisco’s 10. Clevelanders would do well to remember the widespread praise heaped on both the 49ers and Browns divisional rivals Baltimore for their stockpiling of picks in this year’s draft. Both of those teams also happen to have played in last season’s Super Bowl. At the very least, Banner can point to these future assets as evidence of a true vision for the long-term future of the franchise.” [Joeseph/iSportsWeb] —- “As a sexy, top selection, “Bigger, Advanced, Corey Brewer” doesn’t really shine. That’s a good player though…definitely a worthy starter on a contending team…the non-deluxe version played 82 games for 57 win team this year. A few years ago, Deng lead a 62-win team in minutes played. This is a type of player that helps teams win games; as discussed in my pre-draft measurement stuff, tall small forwards historically provide the best two-way impact. Given Porter’s work ethic and competitiveness, it seems reasonable that he will follow a similar trajectory.” [Hetrick/Cavs the Blog] —- “Brian Hoyer exerts a peculiar pull over some of my fellow analysts, who give him the “better than many starters” treatment. Hoyer was ordinary-at-best in college and has knocked around the Steelers and Cardinals inactive lists, but perhaps he absorbed pure awesomeness from Tom Brady during his period as the Patriots backup. The Jets coveted his services after the Cardinals released him in the offseason, but the Browns snatched him up. That sentence may be trying to warn us about something, but I will give my colleagues the benefit of the doubt, third stringer-wise.” [Tanier/Sports on Earth] —- “Incumbent starter Carlos Hyde returns for his senior season, fresh off a a campaign that saw him seize the starting tailback job at Ohio State and just 1,000 on the season. Finishing with 970 yards, Hyde found the end zone 16 times. Averaging 97 yards per game, Hyde went for over a 100 yards rushing in four games and scored mulitple touchdowns in six. Projected to serve as Hyde’s chief backup is 6’3″, 230 lb. Rod Smith though 6’0″, 220 lb. sophomore Bri’onte Dunn shouldn’t be far behind. Local product Warren Ball is finally healthy, looking strong and adding to the depth and the stable only gets deeper as the Buckeyes welcome 6’0″, 198 lb. incoming freshmen Ezekiel Elliott to the mix later this summer.” [Lauderback/Eleven Warriors] —- “The site looked at the 86 rookie running backs in NFL history who had more than 200 rushing attempts in their rookie seasons and the numbers don’t reflect well on the Browns No.1 running back and third-overall selection in the 2012 NFL Draft: 58 true running backs rushed for more than 1,000 yards as rookies (Richardson did not). Richardson’s 3.6 yards per carry ranks him 81st out of the 86 running backs. Oakland’s Darren McFadden is only other Top 5 draft pick to average fewer than four yards per carry his rookie season. 27 of the rookie running backs that averaged less than four yards per carry never exceeded their rookie rush attempts again in their career All told, the 82 rookies had almost 18 percent of their career rushing attempts in their first year.” [Moore/Red Right 88]
