You know the drill at this point. The day after we cover the best draft pick at a certain position in Rams history, we then have to shift to the dark side and cover the worst. Yesterday, we unveiled the best tight end ever drafted by the Rams; today we cover the worst. Same criteria as always: I’m only considering tight ends who were drafted in the first three rounds i.e. guys who were expected to contribute right away. My pick, therefore is the immortal Dominique Byrd, selected in the third round of the 2006 NFL draft. Byrd’s career got off to a great start, as he caught six passes for 83 yards and one touchdown in his first game as a Ram. (Just a minute.) (Double-checking my stats.) (GOOD LORD!) OK, never mind. Six catches for 83 yards and a touchdown was actually Byrd’s career stat line, compiled in the forgettable Scott Linehan era of 2006 and 2007. Byrd was subsequently released after the 2007 season. He bounced around the NFL a bit after that but never long enough to catch anymore passes or make any sort of impact. It’s really a shame too because Byrd was a hell of a college player for the powerhouse USC teams in the mid-2000s, but he certainly wasn’t good enough to get by in the NFL with his lackluster work ethic. I’ve written in the past about how bad the Rams were at drafting players in the mid-to-late 2000s, especially 2006. Byrd represents that class well.
