The tight end position in New England has become a touchy subject as of late. Only three seasons ago we had the pleasure of watching Aaron Hernandez, Rob Gronkowski, and captain Tom Brady seemingly reinvent the offensive wheel in front of our eyes. Now, after another squandered season in Brady’s twilight years hushed whispers spread through snow-capped New England suburbs about the sustainability of the injury-prone Gronkowski. While Patriots faithful attempt to push Hernandez and his misdeeds further away from the team image (and their consciousness) with each passing day. There is no denying that the Pats are in need of some help at tight end, but is there anyone on the market that fits their system? Analyzing the available free agent market reveals a steep drop off in talent (and price) after obvious first choice Jimmy Graham, and second option Jermichael Finley. Graham is most suited to replace the skill set lost when Rob Gronkowski is off the field. His sheer size, knack for finding the end zone, and blocking efficiency make him the closest player in the NFL to a Gronkowski clone. But is replacing what Gronkowski brings to the field really the best option moving forward? What made the shake & quake duo so lethal was their combination of skills; Hernandez provided the perfect balance of quickness and athleticism to counter the rumbling, bumbling attack of Rob Gronkowski. Scott Chandler, who has spent the last four seasons with Buffalo, would make a great under-the-radar free agent addition to the Patriots. Standing at 6’7” and weighing in at 280 pounds Chandler provides an immediate pass catching option to the offense. Chandler will help stretch the middle of the field and open up holes for the running backs, as well as providing Brady with another red zone option. While the intriguing prospect lacks the innate blocking ability that Gronkowski brings, the Patriots are already loaded with competent blocking tight ends. Chandler would bring durability and a dual-threat approach that has been missing in New England since the forced departure of Aaron Hernandez. Report: Manziel reaches out to Brady for advice

New Houston Texans head coach Bill O'Brien is looking for another Tom Brady. Maybe Johnny Manziel is trying to prove he can become like the New England Patriots' franchise quarterback. Manziel's throwing coach, George Whitfield, told the Boston Herald that the 2012 Heisman Trophy winner reached out to Brady for advice. Whitfield said the two exchanged text messages and...

NFL could adopt 15-yard penalty for use of racial slur

The head of the Fritz Pollard Alliance that monitors diversity in the NFL, John Wooten, expects the league’s competition committee to enact a rule that would make it an automatic 15-yard penalty if a player uses the N-word on the field, with a second infraction meriting an ejection. According to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports, Wooten spoke about his desire to eradicate the word...

Reporter tries to top Tom Brady's 'slow' 40 time

Training for the 40-yard dash seemed like a fun challenge until I stepped onto the turf at TEST Sports Clubs. A dozen NFL hopefuls were set for another grueling workout under the stern direction of coaches Kevin Dunn and Geir Gudmundsen before I walked in. Players from across the country come here to prepare for this week's NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis, the regional...

Early Game By Game Predictions for the New England Patriots

JIM ROGASH/GETTY IMAGES Seth Adler New England Patriots *Warning:  These are very early predictions.  They were made directly after the 2013 season ended.  They were made before any combine or draft. For the last eleven years (excluding the 2002 season), the Patriots finished first in the AFC East.  And expect that they will do the same this season.  The reason for their success...

Why New England Patriot Fans Need to Shut Up!

“Kraft needs to go spend some serious money this season if the Patriots want to win the Super Bowl.” It seems like this is the only line people have been tweeting since the Patriots season came to a close after a loss in the AFC Championship Game (their third appearance in as many years). With players like Austin Collie, Logan Ryan, and Chris Jones the Patriots came within one...

A.J. McCarron Compares Himself To Tom Brady, Wants To Be Patriots’ Backup

The New England Patriots will need a new backup if they get their wish and trade quarterback Ryan Mallett for a second-round pick. The natural choice would be Alabama’s A.J. McCarron. McCarron is projected to be a second- or third-round pick, and due to his size, pedigree and lack of elite arm strength, the Crimson Tide signal-caller has been compared to Tom Brady. McCarron can...

Alabama QB AJ McCarron would welcome the opportunity to learn under Tom Brady

If by some chance AJ McCarron ends up in New England, he would feel right at home. "It's almost like New England is the Alabama of pro football," the Rolling Tide product said. "Coach (Nick) Saban learned under coach (Bill) Belichick. It would be almost deja vu in a way." That outcome is not farfetched. The Patriots could shop backup quarterback Ryan Mallett...

AJ McCarron feels 'disrespected,' likens himself to Tom Brady

Maybe my favorite media session of the entire day Friday was Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron. Almost an afterthought in the group of quarterbacks at the 2014 NFL Combine, McCarron's working out this weekend with a major chip on his shoulder. Dude finished his college career with a ridiculous 36-3 record, but says he feels "disrespected" because his team won too much...

The New England Patriots Mount Rushmore: Agree or Disagree?

Following the spirited debate between Bill Russell and LeBron James regarding the “Mount Rushmore” of NBA players, our very own Carl Pheiffer took it upon himself to break down the four most important players for each NFL team. QB Tom Brady - Could any of you argue for Steve Grogan, Tony Eason, Drew Bledsoe or Jim Plunkett? Neither could I.   NT Vince Wolfork - As a Bills fan...

Top 10 free agent tight ends in the NFL

The tight end position has been going through an evolution of sorts in the recent years. A tight end has never been as dominant in the passing game as it has the last few years or so. Names like Rob Gronkowski, Aaron Hernandez, Jimmy Smithm and yes, even Dennis Pitta have been part of a near-revolution, if you will, of the position. That last name, in particular, carries the most...

Top Five free agent wide receivers the Patriots could sign

Brad Mills/ USA Today SportsThe Patriots enter the 2014 offseason with a lot of very interesting questions about their future. Back-to-back losses in the AFC championship game coupled with Tom Brady's advancing age (believe it or not, Tom will turn 37 this August) have led to concerns about how much longer the Patriots window for contention will be open, along with the question...
