Enter this off season’s Dolphins transactions with the re-signing of Pro Bowl cornerback Brent Grimes and signing of free-agent Cortland Finnegan (AKA Andre Johnson’s rag doll); the Dolphins added strength to their secondary. Even adding rangy and tall Walt Aikens in the 2014 draft shows the Dolphins aren’t yet satisfied with the depth at the cornerback position. Not to mention, Michael Thomas, Ireland’s final waiver pickup from the 49ers who sealed the win versus the Patriots in December with a game-ending interception of Tom Brady in the end zone. However, one wonders what former GM Jeff Ireland’s born and bred 2013 draftees Jamar Taylor and Will Davis thought of the move? Remember it was an “unhealthy” Jamar Taylor who was tested and burned in week 4 versus the Saints by Darren Sproles. in week 15 it was Will Davis who became Tom Brady’s go-to guy torching him with little known and less experienced New England receivers. Both corners began the offseason working toward the goal of getting active on Sundays after the departure of Nolan Carroll and Dimitri Patterson. At this juncture, it is little known, what the Dolphins plans are for both cornerbacks. Both players can play when healthy and play at a high level. During the preseason Will Davis hauled in interceptions and Jamar Taylor was nursing a hamstring injury. Right now, the goal should be to fight for a spot on the roster and just be ready to get after it during the June camp and training camp. For Taylor and Davis, they will have to prove they can stay ahead of the curve in playing in the NFL facing the best competition. They cannot let the game get too big for them by cowering under pressure. Both must find a way to thrive under the best of circumstances playing behind two-time Pro Bowler Brent Grimes and cagey veteran Cortland Finnegan. Last season saw a renaissance and a turn over forcing boon with the Dolphins’ secondary hauling in 16* interceptions. In all, the Dolphins secondary last season was one of the most improved units on the team and showcased their ball-hawk tendencies at the cornerback position. The question remains, will both Jamar Taylor and Will Davis make an impact on this Dolphins team or will they show they were never a fit? Nevertheless, Dolphins fans have high expectations of this secondary and knowing that the Dolphins opponents had 19 interceptions serves as a directive to Kevin Coyle and his coaches to do more with what they have. *According to NFL.com, the Dolphins had 18 interceptions with Dannell Ellerbe getting two of them.
