Blog So Hard Sports:
The rumors are flying around that Robert Griffin III will start training camp on the PUP list. Just to let everyone know, this is to be expected and is not a huge concern. To our knowledge he hasn’t had any set backs and if there was a game today, he more than likely “could” suit up. I think is safe to say he’s healthier today than he ever was in the month of December last year. There was a recent report from NFL.com’s Greg Rosenthal that Robert Griffin III “could” start training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list. If this is the case, it would mean he cannot participate in any of the team practices for the first two weeks of camp. The PUP is also for players such as Adam Carriker who are still rehabbing their injuries and might not be ready for the regular season. A team can designate a player to be put on PUP before training camp begins. If Griffin is listed on the PUP, he would be eligible to return to practice after the first two weeks have passed, or anytime between then and the first 6 weeks of the regular season. Again, calm down! I can see you tearing up through my iPhone, and no, I don’t work for the NSA. We shouldn’t let this report get us down. First, this is a “could”, not a “will”. Second, this is exactly how the Vikings handled Adrian Peterson’s knee injury last August and last time I checked he turned out alright, just led NFL in rushing during the 2012 season. I want to remain clear here though, at this point, this is just a rumor. The fact is, no decision has been made on that yet and we shouldn’t expect coach Mike Shanahan or RG3to tell us much about what the plan is before training camp begins. It totally shouldn’t surprise anyone if Griffin made the PUP list to start camp, especially considering the reaction that the public had to Shanahan allowing Robert to remain playing in the playoff loss to Seattle in January. RG3 is the most valuable piece to the near term and long term success of the Washington Redskins and hopefully everyone involved learned a hard lesson last in January. The key is to make sure Robert is 100%, can take the hits and can remain healthy for the long-term, rather than worrying how he looks during training camp and preseason. We must have continued patience with RG III’s rehabilitation. We all want to see Griffin running around like he did last training camp and preseason with the 1st team offense, but his health is the key here and long-term health. The question has to be, do we want to just see Robert Griffin play in meaningless games this preseason and hear that he’s practicing full strength or do we want him to be fully healthy for the duration of the season? Right now, I’m leaning towards wanting RGIII to sit out all of the preseason games.
