Found February 19, 2014 on cover32 - 49ers:
With Vernon Davis under contract through 2016, the 49ers have no immediate need to sign a marquee tight end. That’s a great spot to be in. Game-breaking tight ends like Davis could become very expensive in the near future, as big names like the Saints’ Jimmy Graham and the Ravens’ Dennis Pitta lobby to receive the same financial treatment as wide receivers. Graham and Pitta, who were listed among cover32′s top 10 free agent tight ends, reportedly aren’t close to resigning with their current teams, and could be slapped with franchise tags if they don’t reach agreements before the March 3 franchise-tag deadline. Should that happen, both players will likely file immediate grievances with the NFL. As NFL.com wrote Monday, the projected 2014 franchise tag for tight ends is $6.8 million, as opposed to $11.6 million for wide receivers, according to NFL Media’s Albert Breer. Given his numbers from 2013 and the nature of his position, Graham certainly could have a case. He mostly lines up in the slot like an overgrown No. 3 receiver. His stats are those of a franchise wideout though — Graham totaled 1,215 receiving yards and 16 touchdowns last regular season. Compare those numbers to those of some of the top receivers in the league: Josh Gordon: 1,646 yards, 9 TDs Calvin Johnson: 1,492 yards, 12 TDs Andre Johnson: 1,407 yards, 5 TDs DeSean Jackson: 1,332 yards, 9 TDs Brandon Marshall: 1,295 yards, 12 TDs Eric Decker: 1,288 yards, 11 TDs Dez Bryant: 1,233 yards, 13 TDs Vincent Jackson: 1,224 yards, 7 TDs Anquan Boldin: 1,179 yards, 7 TDs Torrey Smith: 1,128 yards, 4 TDs While Pitta’s numbers aren’t nearly as impressive, he assumes the same role as Graham in the Ravens’ offense. Davis does, too. He scored a team-best 13 touchdowns and had 850 receiving yards (second most on the team) in 2013. It seems unfair that elite players like Graham are limited to so fewer franchise-tag dollars as wide receivers simply because of where they line up on field — some tight ends line up outside regularly. With Davis in mind, the 49ers should keep an eye on what transpires. - By the way, Davis is the best tight end in 49ers history. During some down time Monday, Davis watched some ice dancing and decided to toss a bouquet of flowers in support of a performance by American figure skaters Maia Shibutani and Alex Shibutani. Unfortunately, the bouquet toss by Davis landed a bit short...

Jimmy Graham and New Orleans Saints at odds

From the department of ‘we saw this one coming,’ Jimmy Graham and the New Orleans Saints will be fighting over the franchise tag. Graham and his agent believe he should be tagged as a wide receiver rather than a tight end, something the Saints don’t agree with. The difference between the two positions is almost $4.8 million for the 2014 season. None of this is surprising...

WATCH: Vernon Davis Does a Really Good Bad Arnold Schwarzenegger Impression

Vernon Davis has been keeping busy on Instagram while in Sochi as an honorary captain of the U.S. curling team. One of the latest additions to his page shows the 49ers tight end goofing off while waiting for his flight to take off by doing his impression of the Governator, Arnold Schwarzenegger. It reminds me of a lot of Adam Sandler's early work--so bad it's good. For a quick...

Report: Ravens expected to tag Pitta if they can’t strike a deal

var ACE_AR = {Site: '898551', Size: '468060', CallType: 'IFRAME'}; We mentioned on Tuesday that the Ravens and tight end Dennis Pitta aren’t close to getting a deal done. According to the Baltimore Sun,  the Ravens will likely use the franchise tag on Pitta if they can’t sign him to a new contract prior to the start of free agency. Unless that financial...

Offseason success in New Orleans comes down to one deal

One of the biggest potential story lines of this off-season could be coming out of the New Orleans Saints’ front office. Jimmy Graham’s rookie contract expired after last season and General Manager Mickey Loomis is dealt with the task of resigning the All-Pro Tight End. The only problem however is cap space. Since Jimmy Graham is a superstar, he is most likely going to require...

Jimmy Graham to file grievance if Saints franchise tag him as a tight end

Tweet Jimmy Graham has thrived with the New Orleans Saints as a versatile tight end/wide receiver over the years, but having him line up all over the line of scrimmage may end up costing them a few million dollars. According to NFL.com’s Ian Rappoport, Graham will file an immediate grievance against the Saints if they try to designate him with the franchise tag for tight...

Drew Brees using twitter to court Jimmy Graham

The Drew Brees to Jimmy Graham connection is one of the most potent in the NFL, so it makes sense that they would at least attempt to be friends off the field to increase their rapport. With Graham’s looming contract discussions on everyone’s mind, Brees took to Twitter to remind Graham just who his friends are. He started with a little flattery: .@TheJimmyGraham looking shredded...

Mailbag: Jimmy stays, who’s going to kick, and Richard Sherman as a Saint?

In this week’s mailbag, I weigh in on the Jimmy Graham situation and tell you which Saints player you’d want with you in a fight. 1.) What are the odds Jimmy Graham is NOT a Saint next year? I (along with most pundits) would like to say that there is absolutely zero chance that Jimmy is not on the Saints next season.  Ultimately I think he will be, but you really just don...

Vernon Davis Says Richie Incognito Is A Great Guy

Vernon Davis made an appearance on Mike and Mike today and spoke about how much he liked Incognito. “Richie Incognito is a great guy. I know him really well. When I heard about it, I didn’t think he would do anything...

Jimmy Graham to File Grievance If He’s Franchise Tagged as TE

This is going to be an interesting case. Graham is a tight end who lines up as wide receiver the majority of the time. Fine print in the CBA says franchise tags are based on % of plays you play the most at, so Graham is going to have a pretty strong case in my opinion. No progress yet for Jimmy Graham and #Saints. If, as expected, he’s tagged as a TE, expect an immediate grievance...

Saints, Jimmy Graham on the clock as franchise tag period opens

The clock is officially ticking for the New Orleans Saints to negotiate a long-term deal with tight end Jimmy Graham. Teams were allowed to place the franchise tag on one of their players beginning Monday. They have until the March 3 deadline to use the tag. The Saints will almost undoubtedly place the tag on Graham on or before that deadline. The tag is a one-year, guaranteed...

Ravens and tight end Dennis Pitta battling franchise tag

The Baltimore Ravens have been making headlines the past couple of days with the restructuring of linebacker Terrell Suggs' contract and the unfortunate arrest of running back Ray Rice.  In the shadows of the Ravens' bigger news, a new struggle has been brewing with tight end Dennis Pitta.  Negotiations between Pitta and the Ravens regarding a franchise tag have "...

Top 10 free agent tight ends in the NFL

The tight end position has been going through an evolution of sorts in the recent years. A tight end has never been as dominant in the passing game as it has the last few years or so. Names like Rob Gronkowski, Aaron Hernandez, Jimmy Smithm and yes, even Dennis Pitta have been part of a near-revolution, if you will, of the position. That last name, in particular, carries the most...
