The Chicago Bears release Kevin Shaffer
The Bears have released 30-year old OT Kevin Shaffer. Shaffer played in all 16 games for the Bears last season but he only started 2 games. He played in 32 games (7 starts) in his two years with the Bears. With Jay Cutler looking like a pinata, the Bears need to bring in a lot of new blood for the O-Line. They shouldn’t miss Shaffer at all going forward.

Bears Must Cover for Overmatched Shaffer
From Neil Hayes' Inside the Bears section at the Sun-Times:Olin Kreutz seemed to indicate that Frank Omiyale will be starting at left tackle against the Packers on Monday night. Then again, I could be reading too much into it.Kreutz was asked if he was confident in whomever ends up playing left tackle. Here's what he said: "It's always an adjustment. I think Frank...

Kevin Shaffer Cut?
Bears OL Kevin Shaffer might not make the final roster cut.
Offensive line coach Mike Tice gave Shaffer the second-highest grade (behind Olin Kreutz) for the 2009 season, but the Bears might decide to go younger (and cheaper) with their backups. Johan Asiata, J'Marcus Webb and James Marten appear to be ahead of Shaffer in the pecking order.

Keeping Williams at LT makes sense
LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- It's probably a wise idea for the Bears to keep the offensive line status quo this week versus Green Bay -- Chris Williams at left tackle and Kevin Shaffer on the right side.
Moving Williams again makes no sense considering the former first-round pick is expected to be the Bears' starting left tackle in 2010. That should be a no-brainer. On the other...

Shaffer gets reps at right tackle
LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- With Chris Williams moving over to the left side, eight-year veteran Kevin Shaffer took the first team reps at right tackle during Wednesday's practice.
"If that's the case (starting at right tackle against the Rams), you know it's something I've been working for all year, starting with training camp and everything," Shaffer said....

First-hand experience
LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- Chicago Bears offensive lineman Kevin Shaffer is a good person to ask about the Cleveland Browns' unsettled quarterback situation. A member of the Browns from 2006-08, Shaffer has first-hand knowledge of both Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn. "D.A. [Anderson] has a great arm," Shaffer said. "He's a guy that is going to sit in the pocket...
