This 2013-14 NHL Season Preview features the Carolina Hurricanes.
Since winning the Cup in 2005-06, the Hurricanes have only made the playoffs once in 7 seasons. 2012-13 was especially tough as they posted their worst winning percentage since the franchise was in Hartford in 1993-94.
The talent to be better is certainly there. Eric and Jordan Staal give them a potent combination down the middle, while players like Jeff Skinner and Alex Semin provide speed and scoring on the wings. They even have a solid goaltender in 2006 Conn Smythe winner Cam Ward.
Yet despite playing in the perennially weak Southeast division for years, Carolina fails to get over the hump.
What went right in 2012-13
