Senior goaltender Kent Patterson is having a tremendous season for the University of Minnesota men's hockey team. Patterson has already set a school record for shutouts with six, and this weekend he will surpass 1,000 minutes played. In fact, the senior from Plymouth, Minn., has played every minute of the season in goal for Minnesota. After 16 games, Patterson is 11-4-1 with a 1.99 GAA and a .922 save percentage. Last year, Patterson took over for injured Alex Kangas and got hot in the second half of the season. He was named second-team All-WCHA, and his teammates voted him the John Mariucci team MVP award winner for the season.Patterson is property of the NHL's Colorado Avalanche, who picked him in the fourth round of the 2007 draft with the 113th overall pick. The future looks bright for Patterson as his Gophers have been ranked in the top five spots nationally for the past month and he seems to have a legitimate shot at the NHL down the road.Seems like the perfect time for Patterson to be the subject of this edition of 5 Questions.1.KG: How old were you when you knew that you wanted to be a goalie? PATTERSON: Right after I started skating I was in mites, and back then the coaches rotated the goalie equipment around the entire team. As the season went on, it started staying with me longer than the other guys because I loved playing the position and nobody else seemed to mind.2.KG: When you started playing the position, was there a goalie in the NHL that you looked up to? PATTERSON: Martin Brodeur of the New Jersey Devils for sure was that guy for me. I have always looked at him as an idol of mine, I mean he has had an incredible career for the Devils. His style is so unique, but I've always tried to model my game off what he does. He is able to move around the crease with great ease and he always seems to be in the right position. Brodeur is all about being consistent, and that is exactly what I am hoping to do with the Gophers.3.KG: What is your game day routine like? PATTERSON: I try to do everything the same on every game day. I really don't have any superstitions, but I stick with the same pattern each game. I try not to think about the game too much during the day, and when I arrive at the rink that is when I start to get focused in. Stretching is key for me. I make sure to get my body loose and my mind right before I take the ice. I never use an Ipod or listen to music. For me, that stuff can be a distraction.4.KG: What is your favorite part of being the goalie? PATTERSON: The excitement of making that big save in key moments of the game. There is nothing like that rush. I also love the feeling of helping the team win games. We are having a great season so far, and when the buzzer goes off and they unload from the bench to greet me it is an awesome feeling. My first two years here at Minnesota I was mostly on the bench just supporting the guys, which was fine. But now I am out there every game and it is so much more fun.5.KG: Is the dream of playing pro hockey still on your mind? PATTERSON: The dream has always been there, and it still is today. I love where I am at right now, and this season with the Gophers is my top priority, but as a senior sometimes you have to think about what lies ahead, too. It's a long road to get to the NHL, but ever since I was a little kid watching Martin Brodeur I have dreamed about someday getting there. I am really happy with the way our season is going, but I am going to continue to work hard and maybe someday that dream will be a reality.
