I don't watch a whole lot of hockey, but I do know that if you have a 2 goal lead going into the third period, you should probably try to protect it. The Philadelphia Flyers apparently don't know that, since they sleepwalked (sleepskated?) through the biggest period of hockey they've played all year.

Phew. Patrick Thoreson, who blocked a shot with his groin in yesterday's game, learned today that he won't need surgery to remove one of his testicles. It almost seemed inevitable. The game was tied 4-4 late in the third period, and Alexander Ovechkin had yet to score a goal. Somehow, everyone knew that he was going to make his mark in this game, his first ever in the NHL playoffs. Sure enough, Ovechkin netted the game winning goal in the final five minutes of play. The Washington Capitals came back from a 4-2 deficit thanks to D Mike Green's 2 goals to beat Philadelphia in the Stanley Cup Playoff series opener, 5-4.
The most un-suspecting Capital started off the scoring on a rebound off of Philadelphia Goalie Martin Biron. Donald Brashear took a rebound from a long slap shot by D Tom Poti to give the Caps a 1-0 edge. Five minutes later...

After Friday's Game 1 collapse by the Flyers, they learned a valuable lesson, that they could easily slip back into the bad habits that caused them to lose 10 straight games earlier this year. Hockey is a 60 minute game, and playing anything less will spell loss.
