You can't make this story up. This is one of these nice stories, but you can't phantom it happening in today's NHL.
By NHL.com Staff --- The Washington Capitals dressed a 6-foot-7 producer for their Web site as their backup goaltender for the start of Friday's game against the Ottawa Senators because of an injury to Jose Theodore.

Brett Leonhardt, who played Division III hockey in college and has dressed for practices when the Caps needed an extra goalie, signed an amateur tryout contract before the game. He took part in the pregame warmup and was on the bench when the game began at the Verizon Center.

I Sense a Special Season in the Making

In there anybody in the East a reasonably healthy Caps' club should waive a white flag of surrender to? I wondered about Boston before Wednesday night -- 19-4-4 is the stuff of stud teams. The Bs came out flat, and Johnny stoned them pretty good, and I still believe all things being relatively ...

Pothier Skating at Kettler

OFB reader vanzabdan emailed this photo of Brian Pothier from Kettler yesterday: "I was pleasantly surprised Saturday morning, as I sat with my 3 year old watching the injured Caps skate, to see Brian skating with the boys. Best wishes on his recovery and whatever he decides to do."

"You with the pretzels, get in there."

The way injuries and recall travel logistics have been, this commercial from the 90's seems rather appropriate. Note the snazzy sweaters of the team in white. No official word if the team in red had anyone with the last name Fedorov. Kozlov, Ovechkin, Semin, or Varlamov. Thanks to Capi... ...

Looking for Positives

By Peter LeviAs the Senators continue their?spiral into oblivion this season, it?s difficult to find the positives.? From puzzling management decisions?to puzzling coaching decisions, the simple fact is that Ottawa does not have the talent to make the playoffs.? So what is there for a Sens fan ...

Capitals' Drafting Diagnosis: Healthy

With the steady stream of prospects and minor-leaguers contributing to the Capitals' success in this injury-plagued season, a reasonable person might not need a heck of a lot more evidence that the Caps' scouting prowess has fully and meaningfully reversed the horrific trend of the 90's.If they did want further proof, however, you could point to Stefan Della Rovere...

A Big Ten Battle on Ice: Tara vs. Buckeye Caps

Earlier this week Tara Wheeler, Miss Virginia 2008, jumped back into her goalie gear and hopped out onto the ice at Kettler Capitals Iceplex for a shootout showdown with Dave Steckel and Sean Collins. The Big Ten Network had a camera crew to record the two former Ohio State skaters' attempts to ...

A 'Fantasy' Come True

How's this for the ultimate Christmas gift: hanging out on the ice with Ovechkin and then going on a shopping spree with him? The holidays came early for some lucky kids! (Then again, if that shopping spree was in the Ballston Mall, I guess I'm not that envious. Still, it's a nice thing ...

Capitals dress Web site producer as backup and win

Reflections on a Special Night

Our favorite Russian correspondent Dmitry Chesnokov passed along to us a translation of a SovetskySport interview of Capitals' Head Coach Bruce Boudreau and his new netminder, Simeon Varlamov, from Saturday.SovSport has a lot of guys in North American cities covering the NHL.One of them, Gennadi Boguslavski, met with coach Boudreau before thegame and asked a couple of questions about Varlamov.

Revisiting the Varlamov Interview

Per Tarik and Corey, Simeon Varlamov will make his NHL debut in Montreal on Hockey Night in Canada. At least there won't be any pressure on the rookie. We thought it would be a good time to revisit Varlamov's sit down with the media this past July.

Varlamov Nearly Perfect in Debut

So what did Bruce Boudreau do? Recall Daren Machesney? Nope. They called up the 2006 first round draft pick, 20 year old Simeon Varalamov from Hershey.
