According to CSNPhilly, word has spread around the NHL that the Flyers are deep in discussions with Emery and, barring a last-minute breakdown, will sign the goalie when free agency opens in July. Emery last played for a team in the KHL, a Russian League, after being waived by the Ottawa Senators in 2008.

  • This could be a genius move by the Flyers, or it could blow up in their face
  • i like it and hate it at the same time...i wanted them to trade for giguere or luongo or sign khabibulin or somethin. Emery is still young and had a very good year overseas
  • I like the move. Emery is a tough nut. Staying the same isn't going to improve the team. Another good defenseman is also needed. Randy Jones and Andrew Alberts weren't top quality players last year. they need to be replaced.
  • Yeah- Emery, Avery; same kettle of fish......
  • I didn't mind Biron when he started for buffalo, but emery has the stones and fierce play, keep both and yall have 2 good goalies. Biron can make some shockingly good, athletic stops but also some boneheaded moves
  • SOMETIMES REALITY HURTS BUT WE HAVE TO BE REAL. I WAS BORNED AND RAISED IN PHILLY, I LOVE ALL THE SPORTS TEAMS BUT I HAD TO CUT THE FLYERS LOSE. THE FLYERS ARE THE ONLY TEAM IN PHILLY THAT REACHES THE POST SEASON AND DOESNT SHOW ANY GRIND OR GRIT IN THEIR PLAY. THE ALWAYS PLACE A GOOD TEAM ON THE ICE BUT WHEN ITS TIME TO BUCKLE DOWN AND MAKE A PUSH FOR THE CUP THEY RUN AND HIDE. ITS COOL YOU CAN BASH ME FOR THIS BUT THE FLYERS ARE INDEED THE YANKEES OF THE NHL. THEY AQUIRE ALL THESE TOP GUNS EACH YEAR. AND THEY ALWAYS LET THE FANS DOWN AT THE END.....
  • let the fans down??? your avatar features a sixer jerey thats the definition soft.
  • Emery SUCKS!!! I do not like this move in ANY WAY!!!!
  • Hmmmm this is interesting. It's not that Emery is entirely a bad goaltender. He's just not very consistent with his game. When he's good, he's good. He is is just def not a starting goaltender. I think it's a horrible move to get rid of Marty for Ray.
  • ummm, the sixers are much worse in the playoffs than the sixers buddy. anyway, i like the move for a couple of reasons but they are all contingent on the fact that emery has indeed grown up while in russia. the reviews about him have been very well except for the one bonehead incident. hes played pretty well while he has been over there and should come back very hungry to prove everybody wrong about him. what i wouldnt like is if he comes back and starts to influence all the other young players on the team negatively. the young flyers already like to party a bit, but if emery influences them to do it more that might spell some trouble. all in all though, i really like the balls of the signing
  • Emery needs to stop beating on Biron!
  • Why not resign Biron??? He's cluth in the games that count
  • The point of the Flyers doing this is to save $$$. Emery will cost the Flyers about $1 million. I bet they sign him to a 1yr deal too. The Flyers sign Backlund, a goalie from the Swedish Elite League late last season, so he will most likely be your backup. By this the Flyers could save about $2 million. And this team needs all the $$$ it can get under the salary cap. After the 2009-2010 season Luongo will be a UFA. By not signing Biron to a long term contract this allows the Flyers to make a serious run at him, since pretty much their entire roster, minus Coburn will be signed for that season. So save the $$$ on your goaltending, bulk up the blueline and make a run for Luongo come 2010-11 season. This isn't the greatest move by signing Emery, but right now the most logical.
  • plain and simple emery is the ****!!!!
good move by holmgren and the philly brass!!!
will definitely be looking forward to see his shinanigan in the N__H__L!!
    Bitches!
  • Emery is just another hot head - great job Flyers - keep giving me reasons to despise the team!
  • Don't know much about hockey, but will this guys stay out of trouble long enough to even play?
  • Flyers need to improve overall to make major impact in the NHL..
  • As a non-Flyer fan question, wo would be Emery's back-up? I personally think Biron is a better fit with Philly than Niittymaki, but the idea of bringing in Emery is a good move if Emery can stay consistent. That said, I would still want to hang on to Biron as a security measure. Is this a money issue with Biron?
  • It's much more important to get a BIG, puck moving D-man... i.e. Bouwmeester, Komisarek... a guy that can secure the crease (making any goalie we have better), block shots, pepper the goalie on PP with a heavy shot, and wear you down physically. We already have Kimmo or Coburn to mark the other team's best player, so they won't have to worry about that as much. My point is, like I said earlier, a big, solid D-man will make our goalies better, whoever it is!
  • and tats part of the reason to get emery. he will be cheaper than biron and make it possible to sign one of those defensemen.
