The Tampa Bay Lightning have kicked off free agency with a bang by signing now former Pittsburgh Penguins left wingers Ryan Malone and Gary Roberts to new contracts. The Malone deal $31.5 million over 7 years, is sure to raise a few eyebrows. However, the new Lightning owners were actually very shrewd in the way they structured it. There are some though who believe these deals will have a bigger impact on the Lightning roster down the line.

I think it's safe to speak for most Penguins' fans when I say that we would've thought someone would have re-signed now that we're 48 hours away from the commencement of free agency on Tuesday.

As of 12 o'clock noon, the NHL free agency period officially began. Rangers' unrestricted free agents include: Sean Avery, Mitch Fritz, Andrew Hutchinson, Jaromir Jagr, Darius Kasparaitis, Marek Malik, Paul Mara, Michal Rozsival, Brendan Shanahan, Martin Straka, Jason Strudwick, Steve Valiquette.

Over the last few days we've seen all kinds of weird trades, some may change the course of an entire franchise just like the Toronto Maple Leafs/New York Islanders trade at the draft, while others seem to be a quick fix to an overwhelming lack of scoring, just like the Tampa bay Lightning/Pittsburgh Penguins deal.
