Lately, the talk in Phoenix has been goaltending, however a new development might cause a dustup in the valley. The Tampa Bay Lightning need to clear cap space because their top three forwards hold $22 million against the cap. Because of the Lightning's success, their players in the development system are not coming along as quickly, and they could not acquire a solid top pick in previous NHL Entry Drafts. In order to shore up their player development issues, Lightning General Manager Jay Feaster has allegedly offered Center Brad Richards to the three teams that occupy the first three picks in the NHL Draft on Friday: Phoenix, Chicago, and Philadelphia. The Coyotes have what the Lightning needs and the Lightning has what the Coyotes possibly need: a skater, a scorer, someone with deep playoff experience, and one who could quarterback the power play. The Coyotes have top prospects with forwards Peter Mueller and Martin Hanzal. However, the need is potentially there for someone with playmaking ability. There is cap room for the Coyotes, but is $7.8 million a year worth it?

Brad Richards Update

Tampa Bay Lightning General Manager Jay Feaster shot down the earlier report today about a trade involving his center Brad Richards with those teams that have the high first round draft pick (i.e. Phoenix, Chicago, Philadelphia). Richards is not going anywhere and Feaster is trying to get players to play with him in Tampa Bay. Therefore, Brad Richards will be in a Lightning...

The Latest on Brad Richards

League sources tell the Ottawa Sun that Tampa Bay's Brad Richards is being shopped as of this draft weekend. This could be in large part true due to the signing of centre Chris Gratton last week. GM Jay Feaster knows that he has cap trouble with both Vincent Lecavalier, Martin St.Louis, Richards and Dan Boyle, and getting rid of him will be huge. But to where? Chicago...

Phoenix Coyotes Select Kyle Turris

The Phoenix Coyotes take their third pick and select Kyle Turris. They chose not to trade up but it was clear (albeit after the fact) that the Coyotes wanted Turris from the outset. I think they picked a solid guy, in both of playing ability and attitude. From the articles I've linked to and read, Turris will be an impact and character player. Plus, he doesn't take...

Franchise Faces

Before General Manager John Muckler was fired from the Ottawa Senators, he was reportedly involved in a trade discussion that included Coyotes defenseman Derek Morris for Senators goaltender Martin Gerber. Lately, Morris has been involved with the off-season promotional campaigns for the franchise (open house, upcoming draft party) and it is possible that he will not be with the...

Coyotes Want to be Number One?

It seems that Phoenix Coytoes General Manager Don Maloney and the scouting staff think there is a player that can impact the organization right away, or that there is player that if they waited, may no longer be available. So the rumor is that they might offer a Coyotes player for the number one pick from the Chicago Blackhawks.

Wayne Gretzky Weighs in on the Nashville Situation

Wayne Gretzky was interviewed yesterday by CTV's eTalk about his thoughts regarding the Nashville Predators potential sale and relocation to Southern Ontario. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman insists that the transaction details are very premature and that even though potential new owner Jim Balsillie has good intentions, it's still not a done deal. The economic realities...

Prospects for the Phoenix Coyotes

The future for the Phoenix Coyotes is very bright. With four players ranked in the top 50 of The Hockey News Prospects (Peter Mueller, Martin Hanzal, Keith Yandle, Blake Wheeler) and adding Kyle Turris to the mix, when these players mature, the franchise looks very solid. Peter Mueller will probably make the team this season whereas Wheeler and Turris will spend a year or two...
