Unsurprisingly, Becky Hammon, a ten year WNBA veteran and four time All Star, will be playing in the Beijing Olympics. But what is surprising is the South Dakota native, often described as the typical "All American Girl," will be suiting up for Russia and not the USA. Hammons decision has gained great attention and created a big controversy with US National Coach recently calling her "a traitor." However, Hammon counters that she was never given a chance to play for the American team. Last year when USA Basketball released a list of 23 candidates for the team, Hammon, last season's WNBA MVP runner-up, was not named on it. Though the list was later added with the list expanded to 30, she believes this was purely a token invitation.Instead she was given Russian citizenship while also signing a contract with Russian club CSKA Moscow which will pay her over $2 million over the next four years. And while some have called her a 'traitor,' many others love t...

Strike 2 Donny

Fool me once shame on you. Fool me twice shame on me. Last year I was one of the many to defend Imus and say that his firing was too extreme, well yesterday he was at it again with the racial controversy. During a conversation about Jones' run-ins with the law, Imus asked, "What color is he?" Sports announcer Warner Wolf said Jones — formerly known as Pacman...

Hawk Harrelson Talks Catchphrases And Fighting Lou Pinella

I absolutely can't stand Hawk as an announcer but the guy sure is crazy enough to give one hell of an interview. The White Sox play by play man did a piece for the Chicago Sun-Times and here's a snippet....I've called 4,500 ball games -- at least.I was blessed to know Howard Cosell and Curt Gowdy. In separate conversations, they both told me the same thing -- don'...

Pinella vs. Guillen: Battle Rap

The redline series which pits two of baseball's top teams against each other for bragging rights in the Windy City will see round two this weekend. What makes it even better is that they are managed by two of the biggest characters in the game in Ozzie Guillen and Lou Pinella. No one gets more heated, uses more expletives, or gets thrown out of more games than these two. Unfortunately...

Excellent news on Zambrano

The Cubs got the results of the MRI (actually an MR Arthrogram) and they're about as good as one could hope. The Cubs announced after Friday's victory that an MRI on starting pitcher Carlos Zambrano showed a mild strain in his right shoulder. They said the club should know more about his condition Saturday. The right-hander is expected to miss his next scheduled start...

Cubs come back, but not enough

Sean Marshall looked really good for 3 innings and then gave up a couple of hits and seemingly every baserunner scored.  He ended up pitching 4.2 innings allowing 4 runs, but it was a better outing than that.  Mike Wuertz wasn't very good and it was 7-1 O's entering the Cubs half of the 7th.  Jim Edmonds came up with 2 men on and cut the lead in half with another home run. ...

Let’s Not Get Carried Away Here

The Cubs proved that they are the greatest team in the history of the universe while their crybaby neighbors to the south, the White Sox, were exposed as a flawed team that may very well fail to win another series for the rest of the season. Those are the impressions that one might get in reading [...]

Comparing Baseball Eras is Impossible

by Harold FriendThere is absolutely NO WAY to validly compare players who played in baseball’s early days with today’s players. In 1910, the Philadelphia Athletics beat the Chicago Cubs in a five game World Series. The Athletics’ top pitcher, Jack Coombs, started, completed, and won three games. Chief Bender, the Athletics’ next best pitcher, started and completed two games...
