The Power Grid is back for the second straight year. We will desperately try and faithfully do this on a weekly basis. This is not a full NHL ranking, but what we believe are the Top 15. So here you go, less than a week out, here is where we start the Power Grid Top 15. 1st: San Jose Sharks: Little roster turnover from the best record franchise last season. They added Dany Heatley while keeping Joe Thorton and Patrick Marleau. I don't think there is much of a question the Sharks will be playoff bound, barring significant injuries, but will they flop again? 2nd: Boston Bruins: Boston traded Phil Kessel. But they are still a powerful team, fast and Tim Thomas is excellent between the pipes. Ranked too high? Possibly, but that's where we put them for now. 3rd: Chicago Blackhawks: They are young, explosive, and yes, they won without Marian Hossa. Hossa will join the 'Hawks a bit later. After the Hawks inked Hossa to a huge deal, they learned about a shoulder injury that required surgery. When he rejoins the 'Hawks, they will be that much better. Khabibulin is gone, can Cristobal Huet do it all season?4th: Washington Capitals: Great 8 will again seal his existence as the best player in hockey. The Caps will also be looking for huge years from Nicklas Backstrom and Alexander Semin. They key for Semin --- health. Caps lost veterans Victor Kozlov and Sergei Fedorov, but I consider the roster upgraded with Mike Knuble and Brendan Morrison. The underlying question for the Caps will be how far their goal tending takes them, with a battle ensuing between veteran Jose Theodore and Russian super prospect and playoff hero Semyon Varlamov. 5th: Pittsburgh Penguins: The Stanley Cup Champs will of course be in play in the Eastern Conference, where they will expect to battle Washington, Philadelphia, Montreal, New York, New Jersey and others for Eastern Conference supremacy. Sid the Kid and Geni Malkin form the potent 1-2 punch. That isn't the question. Question for the Pens is what effect will the losses on the blue line of Hal Gill and Rob Scuderi have?
