On his blog for ESPN.com, E.J. Hradek takes a quick look at the future of defenseman Sheldon Souray, owner of the NHL's heaviest shot, and the most attractive free agent left on the open market. In the local papers, both the Devils and Rangers have been attached to Souray on the rumor mill, but according Hradek, it's the Blueshirts who appear to have the edge. Souray is reportedly allowing the Rangers time to dump some salary via trade. While a team is allowed to be over the cap until the end of training camp, the Rangers would lose a lot of leverage in the trade market were Souray to sign now.

Once again the Rangers out smart the clueless Flyers. Briere only became more consistant and better because he played with Drury, but somehow Philly signs him to 8 years. Meanwhile Drury and Gomez will have the Rangers playing for the cup in 2008. Nice job Holmgren....
  • The Rangers need to focus on signing Avery and Lundqvist first. Then if they can somehow trade Malik, Straka, but doing that, they'd probably have to package Montoya in thedeal as well... Then you can go after Souray. The PP would be ridiculous if he is on the point....
  • lundquist must be signed above all else to a long term deal!!!!! avery has to be second due to the rangers badly needing grit in the lineup. after those are done figure out if it is possible to bring in souray. remember the rangers got hot last year after they finally realized that they need to play defense and adding souray might not be the best decision if defense is compromised. with the forwards on this team now offense will not be a problem plus maybe look at bringing up staal to help nail down our own end of the ice. plus maybe save a little bit of money for the unexpected.

I read this article off of ESPN first and it makes total sense to me. Yes, obviously the Rangers need to sign Shanahan first. Hossa, Avery and Lundqvist have all filed for arbitration so they'll most likely all be back, if my understanding of arbitration is correct. And it is to my understanding that after January 1st, the Rangers can start talking to the three above named players about contract extensions, so it makes perfect sense to have these three guys go to arbitration and get the paid their less then they're deserved, as all three are big parts of the roster. With the money saved from that they may be able to take a legitimate shot at Souray, which would explain why he hasn't signed anywhere, yet.

The Rangers and Flyers are spending like crazy again....which plays right into the Devils hands. The Devils may not only get Souray for a lower price but could steal Shanny from the Rangers.

Hey...well now they are going for Jovocop...when Maloney left...he might have taken the sanity with him. I hope the spending blows up in their faces but I would like to see Dawes get more than 4th line minutes...the Rangers have a Parise- like player and he needs to see some serious ice time.
