Cullen has three years remaining on the free agent contract he signed with the Blueshirts last offseason at $2.8 million per. While the move certainly aids the Rangers' cap situation, it also removes some of the depth at center that the Rangers had bought themselves by signing Scott Gomez and Chris Drury. The team will now need to seek a replacement for the departing Cullen, perhaps moving Sean Avery to the third line center slot.

  • Good move by th Blueshirts, he didn't fit well in the second line and will be way overpaid to sit in the third line and now they have some money to sign Hossa and Avery...i really like this move

Cullen Is Safe For Now

Since Souray has been taken off the market trade talks for Cullen between the Rangers and Hurricanes have broken down. 'I would have thought that this would have been brought to a head this week, but it's a tricky process and it hasn't,' Hurricane's GM Jim Rutherford told the Raleigh News & Observer. The Rangers may still attempt at adding a top-of-the...

Fly on the Wall: HandshakeGate

Did you really think the far-reaching microphones of SportSquee would not be somehow attached to Marty Brodeur and Sean Avery for Game 5 of the Rangers-Devils series? Come on, now. You know us better than that. Here is a partial transcript of the handshake that wasn't.Editor's note: something...

Avery: Stick a Fork In Me “I’m Done”

Rangers on Letterman

The very underrated Chris Elliot is the star of this bizarre David Letterman segment, with impressive cameos by Brendan Shanahan, Scott Gomez, and Sean Avery. Shanahan in particular might have a future in front of the camera. More from practice later…

Garden of Dreams

Well, you can say this about James Dolan and his cronies at Madison Square Garden: they know how to put on a press conference. Today, the Knicks and Rangers held successive news conferences at their joint training facility in Greenburgh, NY. The Rangers introduced Scott Gomez and Chris Drury, while the Knicks introduced Zach Randolph, Fred Jones, and Dan Dickau.

Why Pro Athletes Attract Trouble

From the "athletes behaving badly" department (in the past month, anyway): • NHL bad boy (Sean Avery) was suspended for six games for a crude remark. • Six NFL players were suspended for allegedly violating the league's drug policy. • Another NFL player (Adam "Pacman" Jones) returned to his team's roster after being suspended, again...

Rangers Resign Last Piece in Avery

The New York Rangers announced today that fiery forward Sean Avery will be returning next season after being awarded $1.9 million today in an arbitration hearing held on Tuesday. Getting Avery resigned means the Rangers now have all of their restricted free-agents signed and the team is set for its first two lines. Avery will probably play wing on the second line along with Brendan...

The Full and Heartfelt Sympathy of the Y Chromosome Population

We’re only a handful of days into the 2008 Stanley Cup playoffs, but the drama is flowing early. Flyer’s defenseman Patrick Thorensen took a shot to the, ah, lower abdominal region and was hospitalized. Early fears were that he would have to have a testical removed, but it looks like he’s going to make it through this intact. Listen, I’m a Penguins fan, and as one there is...

Who is the Hottest Wife/Girlfriend in Sports?

The first match of round three is in the books, and it wasn't even close. Our #16 seed, Elisha Cuthbert, hockey player Sean Avery's babe, pounded our #14 seed Bec Cartwright, Lleyton Hewitt's doll, into submission. The next two beauties to face-off in round three are our #6 seed, Scott Pods' wife Lisa Dergan, versus our #17 seed, wife of Bucs QB Jeff Garcia, Carmella...

Shanny Nears Ranger Return

According to Larry Brooks in the New York Post, the New York Rangers are close to completing a team-friendly deal that would bring Brendan Shanahan back to Broadway for another season and allow the team some desperately needed flexibility with their payroll. "Glen [Sather] has been really good in communicating with me while he was dealing with the [Henrik Lundqvist and Sean...

Mike Keenan Wants to Measure Willie Mitchell's Stick

And the (ahem) Flames' coach is bringing his measuring tape! When hockey meets gay porn and doesn't involve Sean Avery...(This is an actual quote)"Just in case he doesn't know over there," Mitchell said after confirming his stick length. "I've got a tape measure. It's not my stick that does the work, anyway. It's my brain. I think it's...

Straka Out With Concussion

Via Sam Weinman of the Journal News: "…Martin Straka has a concussion and is out, according to Tom Renney, for at least the next two games...In Straka's place, Nigel Dawes took the left wing alongside Scott Gomez and Jaromir Jagr."

Prucha Smells Like Trade Bait

Prucha has become a fan favorite at the Garden, however the return of UFA Brendan Shanahan and RFA Sean Avery would preclude the 24-year-old from seeing much ice time as a top-six forward, and the organization must be at least a little curious to see if prospect Nigel Dawes could produce given similar minutes. Prucha could be a key asset if the team chose to pursue a top-4 defenseman...
