PLAYERS: Jose Theodore

From NHL.com: Mystery solved: ROOKIE SIMEON VARLAMOV IS STARTING IN GOAL FOR THE WASHINGTON CAPITALS. This is a shocking, shocking development. Varlamov, a 20-year-old Russian, was the first goalie out on the ice for warm-ups, leading many in the press box to speculate that he is the starting goalie over Jose Theodore. Usually the goalie who comes out [...]

Varlamov Prepares To Back Up Again

A pretty strong indication that Jose Theodore will get the call for game 2 tomorrow arrives from his backup, Simeon Varlamov, who spoke yesterday with Dmitry Chesnokov of SovetskySport and Puck Daddy:   DC: Has Capitals' head coach Bruce Boudreau spoken with you about your role in the playoffs? Varlamov: "No one has actually talked to me about it. But...

Nobody said it was easy

Jose Theodore was not a popular guy in the Chinatown area of Washington, DC last night.  After he allowed 4 goals on 21 shots (coincidentally, Cristobal Huet allowed 4 goals on 22 shots in last year's playoff opener) in a 4-3 loss, you might have thought Theodore's first name rhymed with clucking listening to the disappointed fans funneling into the Metro.

Ugh...defense and goaltending kill the Caps

It was an intensely fought battle and, in the end, the Caps succumbed to poor defense and goaltending.  Highlights and observations:Jeff Schultz got owned by Brandon Dubinsky and then Jose Theodore muffed the save.  Just an unbelievably awful play. Alex Ovechkin came to play as he had 2 assists, 13 shots, 6 hits, 3 takeaways and played +2 hockey in 26:07.  Ovie got the first...

Penguins continue hot Western streak; Recchi on re-entry waivers

For one game at least, the spotlight shone on someone other than Sidney Crosby last night in Calgary. Kris Letang’s sick deke on Miikka Kiprusoff, which kinda looked like a right-handed version of Crosby’s deke of Jose Theodore a couple of years ago, resulted in the game-winner in the sho...

What I've Learned--the No Context Version

Some nights it's choosing between blogging, watching sports or sleeping. Sports has been winning lately.NBC's John Madden retires. It was time. The Yankees should fire Joe Girardi like the Corleones got rid of Pauley..."Grab the connolis, drop the gun." I've been watching baseball for 30 years. This Yankee bullpen, save for Mariano, is probably the worst version I've seen. Even during...

When Being No. 8 Ain't So Great

You can't say I didn't warn you. When I composed my jeremiad, issued my Fatwah as it were, on the occasion of the Capitals inking Jose Theodore as their no. 1 netminder last summer, I had the past 36 hours in mind: an otherwise nice-looking Capitals' club undone in crunch time because they were most vulnerable where it mattered most -- in net. Basically, I said: you...
