After the Islanders barely made the playoffs last year then made a quick exit once in, they hoped to use this off-season to retool and make another run at it next year. Yesterday was a cruel step in the wrong direction.
With these subtractions to the team and the only addition being Jon Sim, and possibly the return of Michael Peca, the Islanders playoff hopes for the upcoming season look to be dead.

An interesting tidbit via ESPN The Magazine's E.J. Hradek...This is the first I've heard that Blake wasn't wanted on Long Island. If that was the case, one has to wonder why they didn't dump the 40-goal scorer at the trade deadline as the Oilers did with Ryan Smyth. Instead they find themselves without a paddle and you-know-where.
Isles Jilted Again...Smyth Signs in Colorado
Captain Canada is now Captain Colorado, as Ryan Smythhas signed a five-year deal with the Avalanche, joining the on-going free agent exodus off of Long Island. Viktor Kozlov, Tom Poti, Richard Zednik, and Jason Blake all left the Island as well. But Islanders' GM Garth Snow did agree to terms with former-Thrasher Jon Sim. So he's got that going for him.
