So long, Sami: Kapanen retires

After 12 years in the league, Flyers winger Sami Kapanen has decided to end his NHL career. According to Bill Meltzer of Hockeybuzz.com, Kapanen will play for KalPa in Finland, the team he started his career with, for one season before hanging up his skates for good. Kapanen spent the last 4 1/2 seasons with the Flyers and was a total team player, doing whatever it took to help the team win, including playing defense from time to time. He still had one year left on his contract where he would have earned just over a million dollars, so now the Flyers will have a little bit of extra cap space.

Kapanen was a true Flyer at heart: gritty and hard-working and a total team player.

i wanna cry! he was one of my favorites! the little guy played his heart out and all true flyers fans knew who he was. a true philly style player!!!!

Thanks to Sammy for leaving it all on the ice and he will forever remain in the Flyer fans hearts. He played with heart and determination and won't be forgotten. We wish him the best of everything! My son just received an autographed jersey from all the Flyers and I am so happy we got his autograph before he retired!

I was shocked to see he was a -30 in plus/minus for his career. I guess he was on some bad Carolina teams, and his -21 from 06/07 when the Flyers were terrible didn't help.

One of those few players...that no matter what.....played with all heart and grit...no matter how many times he got knocked silly or where he played. He will be sorely missed. Hope he has a happy retirement.
