Stanley Cup Playoffs: Third Round Predictions

Maybe I'm not as hockey-smart as I thought I was. After going 7 for 8 with my first round predictions (although I didn't get any of the series lengths correct), I took a nosedive with my second round predictions, going 2 for 4. Of course, since I picked against the Flyers in the second round, it's a 2 for 4 that I can live with. Still, after failing to correctly predict the length of any playoff series so far, I am not sure how much credibility I really have, but here are my predictions for the next round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs:

Eastern Conference Finals

Pittsburgh (2) vs. Philadelphia (6)

Pittsburgh in Seven

Believe me, I want the Flyers to win, and part of me really wants to pick them. The series will be a classic match-up between two rivals who clearly can't stand each other. The problem is, the Penguins are just too deep. They have their two big guns, Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. Since they play on different lines, it will be up to Flyers coach John Stevens to figure out which one will play against the Flyers shut down unit of Kimmo Timonen and Braydon Coburn. The problem is, the Penguins go so much deeper than that. They have Petr Sykora, who scored 28 goals this season. Ryan Malone added another 27. Then, you have Marian Hossa and Jordan Staal to worry about. Does anyone really think Jason Smith or Randy Jones is going to be able to slow down Hossa or Malone? Couple all that scoring with a goaltender who has been just as good as Martin Biron, and the Flyers have a big challenge ahead of them.

If the flyers can get MAF rattled in the first two games in PItt, and shut down the Malkin line more so than the Crosby line, the Flyers will win this series. They must continue to be physical and get pucks deep on the attack, because PItt is a fast team and can turn a poorly played puck into a scoring chance at any time. Coburn and Kimmo need to continue to step up and do what the have been doing, and the Smith/Jones tandem needs to get a little more physical for this series. As much as i hate PItt i have to admit that i didnt see the Flyers getting this far so as long as its a good series and they show up and play hard ill be happy and excited for next season.

Fleury had a poor showing in last years playoffs, so I agree if the Flyers can get to him early, they may be able to rattle him.

Flyers in 2

Flyers in 6.......GO FLYERS!!!!!!

This is the second time you wen't against. them enriqufed and you were wrong the last time... So hopefuly you are wrong again!!!!!
Flyers in 6!!!!!

Trust me Reds1214, nothing would make me happier than being wrong!

I agree I hope you are!!! lol...
I am a die hard... and I mich rather of played montreal then pittsburg... They scare me... unlike the caps who have one player... they have 3-4!! I still go with philly in 6.

i would watch close with the flyers pens series...... this one is going to be way more competetive then the western conference finals.... this match up has a lot of baggage and represents the future of the eastern conference since both teams are young.... i know alot of people are picking the pens in 7 and all of that but i think you also must deal in the fact that the flyers have fought through so much this year and have a lot of trust in one another...... this is going to be a tough grind it out type of series.... although im going to take the flyers in 6 yes i said it FLYERS IN 6!!!! we've been through too much to be stopped at this point.......... looks for some questionable calls and a bunch of fights to head line the NHL's final 4!

Maybe it's because you're a Philly guy, but people don't seem to be ragging on you (yet) for playing the "Penguins have depth" card. I tried that and got reamed. But, yes, the Flyers do have a really good chance. I just like the Penguins chances more, even if the Flyers won the season series.

The West's match is going to be awesome. Two teams with a bunch of guys who are more than qualified for the Conn Smythe. I can't wait to see how Turco fairs against another high-octane offense. He's shut down two thus far. And Brendan Morrow is just savvy. Need I say more about him? I think not. Granted, I still like Detroit. But there's something about Dallas that has peaked my interest.

Flyers are deep too...7 different players with 20+ goals in the regular season, a new player steps up each series (Briere, Umberger, etc), the best 6 defensemen on the blue line, and the absolute refusal to lose. Everyone said the Caps speed and scoring would be too much for them, then they said that the Habs were too fast/skilled/and deep for them. And guess what...the Flyboys continue to fight an win.

Let's Go Flyers let's go!!!!!!
